FEBRUARY SPOKE

Efrat Livny
As red hearts and roses, cupids and chocolates mark the approach of Valentine’s Day, love is on the mind and in the air.  While love with its elusiveness,  its magic, its entanglements, seems to hold front and center, my own musings have been about friendship.

Friendship is the enactment of what Martin Luther King Junior called “the inescapable network of mutuality” where giving and receiving are one.  Robert Louis Stevenson's saying "a friend is a gift you give yourself" has always intrigued me, and even more so the Buddhist saying “No giver, no receiver, no gift". Perhaps friendship is a state of being, of be-friending life.

February finds Threshold undergoing changes.  Liv Froelich who has served as Assistant Director for the past 7 months, has decided to pursue new paths and passions. Liv's focus on restructuring and streamling many of Threshold's operations have taken it to a new level of functionality and efficiency. Her incredible creativity and artistic talents have gifted us with beautiful organizational and promotional materials. For these we are deeply grateful and we will all miss her.

Liv’s departure comes at a challenging time as I am traveling for the month. However what seemed like a formidable impasse was quickly  abated by the grace and generosity of friendship as Mariah Miller offered to take the helm for this period.

Mariah is an old personal friend and has been involved with Threshold  as a volunteer and supporter from its beginning. While currently residing in Viroqua, WI, she was a long time east side resident.  She is an experienced event planner, an exquisite writer, a strong intuitive and a gifted DJ who has spun her tunes for our opening Winter Session in November. She is deeply engaged in community and follows a path of care and dedication to justice and to humanity.

“No person is your friend who demands your silence or denies you the right to grow” says Alice Walker.

We send Liv off with our best wishes for her next chapter as an advocate for community, the environment and the arts. We hope to see her continue to be part of Threshold and its programs.

We welcome Mariah for the month of February and look forward to the many gifts she brings and to the March Winter Session, "An Almost Spring Fling",  that she will be DJing on March 9th.

Threshold is seeking an Operations and Events Manager to take over in March www.atthreshold.com/employment. Please spread the word and help us find another excellent team member.

And I will be exploring mysterious, colorful Chiapas, be-friending life in all of its iterations. Stay warm and keep the faith.

MEET OUR COWORKERS: CRAIG ELEY
Audio Producer

The best and worst thing about sound is that it is around us all the time. From conversations to concerts to east side jet noise, sound envelops and punctuates moments in our lives. In my work, I think of sound as a raw material that can be transformed into story, music, and art.

As an audio producer, my work is informed by my background as an historian and my research on the history of sound recording technologies and their role in our cultural lives. After grad school, I worked on the Wisconsin Public Radio show To the Best of Our Knowledge where every day was truly a new kind of learning experience shaped by the intellectual expertise of the people we interviewed and the technical work involved in producing a radio show every week.

Now I’m working independently as a freelancer, developing my own stories and helping other people tell theirs. I’ve been working on a series about the history of farming in Wisconsin that is airing on Wisconsin Life , and I’m also teaching a class through UW Continuing Studies in April called “Storytelling in Digital Audio .” I have also recently recorded location sound for a series of videos sponsored by the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, including this one . My podcast and production company is called Field Noise .

I would be happy to talk to anyone in and around the Threshold community who has an idea for a podcast, radio documentary, art exhibit, or any other project that has a sonic component. You can drop me a line at craig@fieldnoise.com.

Body of Sound: Singing From Our Self
With Xochi John and Annie Zylstra
March 10, 10:00am-1:00pm

You're invited to a guided exploration of Voice and Self by Xochi John, Alexander Technique teacher and Annie Zylstra, Natural Voice community choir leader. Together, we will examine the vital relationship between voice and whole body, utilizing mediums of gentle, supportive movement, listening, and song to cultivate a strong foundation of self awareness. It is said that the voice is 'the muscle of the soul'. In growing an awareness of how that muscle functions in us, we can uncover the natural support available within ourselves for more free, embodied singing and expression.
