COVO / Greater Bend Rotary 2019

Kicking off a Warm, Dry and Fed project for Central Oregon Veterans Outreach! COVO and their Outreach program is helping homeless in the three country region.   

45% are Veterans and 65% are Civilians. And they are seeing more Women and kids coming in for help. They’re serving a ton of people we don’t see. Only a small percentage (maybe 10%) are the panhandlers on the corner. They really are sleeping in cars and in tents out in the weather.

Gave out 300 sleeping bags the first quarter. Have had 2,000 “contacts” so far this year.

As a community we need to help keep them warm and dry and fed during the time they are out there.

Donation Committee has approved a $1,000 expenditure for 1lb Propane cans. The handout on the tables shows what they need.

Bob will talk about how we get the stuff we collect to COVO….. We can do this. It will help. 

SHARK TANK AT MOUNTAINVIEW NEEDS JUDGES

Greg Lyons, Automotive and Business Instructor at MVHS emailed us, asking for help with their intro to business class "Shark Tank" judging.  Here's the details--please respond via to Greg at greg.lyons@bend.k12.or.us if you're interested:

MVHS Intro to Bus class is seeking individuals to participate as a member of our "shark" panel. Our students have been working hard to design, or create, a product. Their focus is on designing a product that would make individual's lives better. As a shark, you will judge 6 groups and their respective products; Your job is to pick a winner or the product that has the best potential to succeed. This is an introductory business class and a basic shark tank project. Specific details regarding groups, scoring rubrics, and other info will be provided prior to judging.

We would like each group and sharks to have approximately 10 (max of 15) minutes of interactions time; Each group will present their idea in 3 minutes or less. The remained of time will be used for Q & A. We would ask sharks to take notes and/or score each group at the time they present. Ultimately, we are asking sharks to collaborate and pick "one" winner.

We will need to use 2 class periods to allow each group enough time to present and answer questions. Our presentation will take place on:

1-30-19 (Wednesday) from 9:42 - 10:33 am

JANUARY IS VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH

Vocational Service is one of Rotary’s Avenues of Service which calls every Rotarian to:

• Aspire to high ethical standards in their occupation;

• Recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations, and;

• Contribute their vocational talents to the problems and needs of society.

Rotarians have the dual responsibility of representing their vocation within the club and exemplifying the ideals of Rotary within the workplace.

One of the central goals of Vocational Service is to promote and advance Rotary’s high ethical standards.

Two useful tools Rotarians have to assess these standards are The Four-Way Test and The Rotary Code of Conduct.

DISTRICT 5110 4-WAY TEST SPEECH CONTEST

If your club is eager to engage youth, promote ethical behavior, and advance the mission of Rotary, then the District 5110 4-Way Test Speech Contest is just what you need. The 4-Way Test Speech Contest is open to all public, private or homeschool high school age students, grades 9-12. It requires each participating student to create and present a 5-7 minute speech on a subject of their choice, applying the 4-Way Test to guide their thinking and presentation.
