SW Snapshot: New South West Para/Disability Committee

Para swimming in the South West has been in the spotlight in recent months, with a new regional para committee taking shape. The committee is made up from experienced ex para athletes, coaches, officials and parents from all around the region, who all bring a wealth of knowledge. The committee has a focus to put a clear pathway in place to support any swimmer with a physical disability to achieve their goals. The programme of events for 2019 will include a number of talent ID days, where younger swimmers can come along and have a go in a few races to see if they get the taste for Paralympic success. The regional championships will be held in Bristol on March 9th, where all the talent from across the region will get to compete, throughout the day there will also be the chance for some swimmers to get their classification tests done.
City of Bristol aquatics had a visit from Sasha Kindred recently, 4 time paralypian and world record holder. Sascha gave up some time to come and inspire the youngsters in the pool, offering words of encouragement and inspirational tales of achieving paralympian gold medals.
Links from learn to swim programmes such as the charity Level Water are ensuring more swimmers are being offered the opportunity to join clubs. Training for the coaches is on offer to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to integrate any swimmer into the club, offering a fully inclusive approach. The key to anyone's success is very simple, get to know the individual and focus on what they can do.
If anyone would like any further information on what is on offer across the region then visit the website at www.swimwest.org.uk or email the chair of the committee and para coach from City of Bristol aquatics Louise Johnson on disabilityswimming@gmail.com
This year Swim England is celebrating 150 years as the national governing body for swimming in England.
The history of the organisation can be traced to 7 January 1869 when the first meeting took place at the Turnhalle in Kings Cross. The early members were London-based clubs, but the organisation quickly expanded across the country. Over the course of the following 17 years a number of name-changes took place until in 1886 it became the Amateur Swimming Association.
Throughout the organisation’s history, Swim England - as it is has been known since 2017 – has remained a membership organisation committed to its 200,000 members and over 1,000 affiliated clubs. It continues to lead the aquatics sector, setting the rules of the sport, providing expert teaching and coaching for the workforce and creating a pathway for our talented athletes.
January 2019
Swimming is as important and relevant today as it was 150 years ago. Athletes across all disciplines continue to push the boundaries of ability and speed, and the physical and mental health benefits of swimming regularly have been proven. This has led to swimming being one of the most popular activities with over seven million people swimming weekly and 47 per cent of the population swimming each year.
