Installations Now Through the Spring!

Furthering their commitment to the Queens art community, Queens Council on The Arts commissioned 8 Queens-based artists to create temporary public artworks throughout Jamaica and Jackson Heights through their first ever, public art commissioning program, ArtSite.

QCA partnered with the 82nd Street Partnership to connect artists with local businesses and organizations to locate sites for art throughout Jackson Heights.

ArtSite aims to establish an ecosystem of local artists and art producers to create new work that reflects the diverse cultural stories particular to the communities of Jamaica and Jackson Heights. By allowing the artists to partner and create dialogue with the local business community, they can reinvent the external perceptions of these communities as sources of inspiration and epicenters of the new America canon of dance, theatre, music, art, etc.

The first Jackson Heights artwork, What We Carry, by Yvonne Shortt, was installed in October in Dunningham Triangle in partnership with NYC Parks. Part two of her installation, consisting of the addition of more flowers, will be installed in February 2019. Her sculptural installation will be on view through June 2019.

Artist Chemin Hsiao has been painting his mural titled, My Journey to the West III: Playground, at Zaytoun’s Restaurant, 40-13 82nd Street, over the last few Sundays. Stop by on a Sunday to catch him painting live! The mural will be completed within the next few weeks and will be exhibited through May 2019.

Annabelle Popa’s newly completed 10 foot by 40-foot mural, Guardians of Jackson Heights, at Image Heights Pharmacy, 75-01 37th Avenue, will be on display through May 2019. See what elements you can recognize from Jackson Heights in her mural!

Catch Jimmy Ferguson’s film projections, Between Neighbors: Jackson Heights, on display January 4th through January 20th at Pollos a la Brasa Mario, 81-01 Roosevelt Avenue, with support from Rooftop Films. The film will be projected every night from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm through January 20th.

ABOUT ARTSITE

A key goal of ArtSite is to empower local artists to engage on a local level, understanding that they can be a catalyst for change. QCA, along with its partners, the Jamaica Center BID in Jamaica and the 82nd Street BID in Jackson Heights, seek to create a self-sustaining supportive art culture in these communities.

This program has been supported by the Queens Council on the Arts with funds from NYS Regional Economic Development Council in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts, with additional support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
