From the office

WARMEST THANKS!

Thank you so very much for your generosity this holiday season with our holiday gift drive for our Claremont Community. We were able to give gifts and gift cards to 18 students and their siblings before the winter break, as well as gift cards to parents to be able to purchase groceries and special gifts. Your generosity warms our hearts, and on behalf of the staff and the families that received gifts, we are ever so thankful!

CA BIKE HELMET LAW

All children under 17 need a helmet!

Did you know that under California law, all children 17 and under must wear an approved bicycle helmet. This also applies to children operating roller or inline skates, scooters -including the motorized scooters like Lime and BIRD, and skateboards. If you violate this rule, parents and guardians can face fines, civil liability, and other penalties. Please ensure that your child has a bike helmet AND WEARS IT if they are scooting, skating or biking to school. We want to make sure that all students make it to school and home safely each day.

Please also be reminded that the motorized scooters (Lime, BIRD, etc) are not allowed on campus.  Please also check out the California Law regarding motorized scooters for more information.

INFORMATIONAL MEETING TO LEARN ABOUT TEACHERS’ CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS

Parents United for Public Schools and Oakland Education Association are hosting a public meeting today, Thursday, January 10 at 6pm at the Fremont High School Cafeteria. Oakland teachers have been working for a year without a contract. They are fighting for:
• Smaller Class Sizes — We want to invest more time in every student, especially those in high needs schools
• A Living Wage — So teachers can afford to stay in OUSD and continue serving our students
• More Student Supports — Every student should have access to the supports they need!

There will be childcare & food at the meeting.

ENROLLING IN HIGH SCHOOL NEXT YEAR?

OUSD is accepting high school registration signups through Feb. 8. Signups must be done online this year through the district's website. Click here to apply.

ANGIE THOMAS, AUTHOR OF 'THE HATE YOU GIVE' COMES TO TECH

Angie Thomas, the bestselling, award-winning author of "The Hate U Give," presents her highly anticipated second novel, "On the Come Up", at Oakland Tech's Auditorium on Monday, February 18, 3-5 p.m. (Note, this is a holiday).

We are 1 of 15 sites hosting
Angie Thomas's National tour. Insightful, unflinching, and full of heart, "On the Come Up," an ode to hip-hop, is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; and about how, especially for young black people, freedom of speech isn't always free. Thomas will be in conversation with MK Asante, award-winning writer, filmmaker, hip-hop artist, and distinguished professor.

The cost of the event for the general public is $25.
Buy tickets here.

SPECIAL OFFER: OUSD Library Services is looking for people willing to fund $160 or more (and ask 5 of their friends to do the same) to support 10 students. For $160, 10 students will receive:
• a copy of Angie Thomas' new book "On the Come Up," cover price $18.99
• a copy of MK Asante's memoir, "Buck," value $10.99
• an opportunity to meet MK and Angie in person and to get their books signed by the author
See our
District Library News for how to donate to our program to support this and other exciting literacy events for our students.

The event is sponsored by Oakland Unified School District Library Services and Mrs. Dalloway’s Bookstore.
