Author Event: Helen Zia Last Boat Out of Shanghai:
The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Fled Mao's Revolution Tuesday, February 12th | 6:00pm - 7:30pm

Helen Zia is the author of Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People, a finalist for the prestigious Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize. She was Executive Editor of Ms. Magazine and is a founding board co-chair of the Women's Media Center. Her articles, essays and reviews have appeared in numerous publications, books and anthologies, receiving awards for her ground-breaking stories. The daughter of immigrants from China, Helen has been outspoken on issues ranging from human rights and peace to women's rights and countering hate violence and homophobia.
Doors will open at 5:30 pm, and the event will begin at 6:00 pm. The event will begin with Helen Zia in conversation UMass Boston Professor Emerita Connie Chan. Zia will then read selections from her upcoming book, to be followed by an audience Q&A session and book signing.

We're excited to announce that the 12 life-size figures from Home Town are on view at an at the Nesto Gallery at Milton Academy. The figures are displayed alongside a complete and enlarged set of the Asian American Resource Workshop's 72-page Asian American Comic Book, which Tsen designed and illustrated.
Meet CHSNE's New Interns
We're excited welcome Sally and Vena to their spring internships at CHSNE!
Sally Chen joined CHSNE in January as a Membership Database Intern. Sally is an Information Systems major at Suffolk University with a minor in Big Data. She loves to learn about different cultures and their unique foods. If given the opportunity, she would love to go to Asia and explore the various cities. Vena Nguyen joined CHSNE in January as an Archives & Collection intern. She is a student at Suffolk University where she is majoring in History with a minor in Asian Studies. When she’s not busy with school, you can find her trying out new recipes in the kitchen. CHSNE's Volunteer of the Month
This month, we'd like to show our appreciation to CHSNE volunteer Alex!
Alex Li joined CHSNE in November 2018 as a volunteer transcribing oral histories. He is currently a student at Commonwealth School and enjoys learning about ancient history, biology, and anything related to Shakespeare. Alex hopes to connect periods of his own personal life with those of whom he is transcribing, all while preserving the daily lives of Chinese Americans in Chinatown.
