The Angel said 'Do not fear'

This WEEK

From the Head...

A very Happy New Year to you all.

Our staff INSET on Friday 4th of January focussed on English.  The training day was led by Danny Doyle, Headteacher of St Huberts in Sandwell and a Doctoral Researcher.  This gave us the opportunity to spend the day thinking about how we teach English. We examined all aspects of the subject from how we warm the children up to write, model writing to the expectations we have for the work the children produce.  This process reinforced the good practice we currently deliver but also inspired us to make further improvements.  Teachers have already implemented some of the ideas discussed this week into their planning.  One of these, ‘Word Tennis’ encourages and increases the children’s vocabulary by working with a partner to bat words back and forth that describe a picture or object. Another I would encourage parents to try at home is an activity our Year 6 undertook this week;  to rewrite a well-known story without using the letters i or e.  It proved a tremendous challenge which forced us to think of synonyms but also an incredibly fun way in which to get our brains working.  These were just two of many excellent ideas that my team will be applying in our continued development of the curriculum.

Many people make New Year’s resolutions, often these are not kept or do not last.  In our assembly on Monday we discussed a possible reason for this, that we have to be ready for change.  Just because it is January 1st it doesn’t mean we really can always keep our bedroom tidy or stick to that exercise regime. I encouraged the children to think about making small changes, something positive that if they then look back in a month and they have accomplished something it will make them feel proud. Hopefully we can all do this.

I always welcome parental feedback, as any good school we will always be looking for ways to improve and so please do not hesitate to contact me via email ctrundle@chinthurstschool.co.uk.

Best Wishes
Cathy Trundle

The Adventures of Early Years..

Reception Mathematicians

We have had a wonderful first week back. The reception children have been learning about teen numbers. We have been using numicons (not unicorns as some like to call it) to help us visualise tens and units. The children began to understand that teen numbers are ten plus some more. They created a number line from 0-20 and re-told the sum i.e. 14 is 10 plus 4. To make us really super speedy mathematicians, we have been playing games with dice and dominoes to help us count by sight. We have been very impressed with their effort and hard work.

This Week's Other Stories..

Weather Forecasters

Our Year 1 week so far…and what a week!
We are now Weather Watchers. Weather is our topic for this half term which has made Mrs Jacks very happy- she is OBSESSED with the weather. We identified the countries that form the United Kingdom and how the weather differs in each area. We will be monitoring the forecasts very carefully…
On Thursday we read the story of Elmer and the Rainbow and decided to paint our own rainbow but what a disaster! We only had Blue, Yellow and Red paints. This was going to need thought and our superhero thinking caps…
Wow! We worked out that by mixing these colours we could create others. Our Rainbows have now been planned and Year 1 are looking forward to painting them next week.

LAMDA News

Three of our Chinthurst children took their LAMDA Drama exams just before Christmas and went all the way to London to do their exams. It is very daunting taking the exams at the Head Office of LAMDA and they all did exceptionally well!

Grace F (Year 2) was awarded a very high MERIT for her “Solo Introductory Stage 3 exam”.

Keagan S-T (Year 2)  got a DISTINCTION for his “Solo Introductory Stage 3 exam”,

Ollie R-S (Year 4) was awarded a DISTINCTION for his very first LAMDA exam, which was the “Solo Introductory Stage 3 exam”.

Mrs S-T is super proud! The examiner was exceptionally strict and Mrs S-T is over the moon about these results! Your hard work, dedication and commitment paid off!

Congratualtions!!

Church Assembly

Mrs Lyth

Remember what the angel said the shepherds?  “Don’t be afraid!.  The bible contains the words ‘Don’t be afraid all of 365 times, one for every day of the year!

The beginning of the year can be a time of doing lots of new things.  This year, we will do exams for the first time, we will go on residential trips for the first time, and by the end of 2019, our Year 6 will be starting a new school!  Doing new things can be scary.  So this morning we have learned 5 steps to kill your fear!

   Acknowledge your Fear!

Realise that most of your fears don't even come true.

   Do the thing you fear

   Be curious

Trust in God, and in those that care about you.

Rugby:

U8 v Kingswood House Won 50-20

We went to our first ever rugby match with some training sessions under our tag belts. We played some superb running rugby with all players playing their part, we caused 3 turnovers by tagging the opposition 7 times to gain the ball, showing great skill and tenacity. Try scorers: Lucian 5, Samuel S 2, Rafe 2 and Harry. Well done all, onto Micklefield next.      MJ

U9 A v Kingswood House  Won 80 – 20

First game back after the break and we continued our impressive rugby, running hard with the ball in hand and being strong in defence.  When pressured into having to pass the ball to each other, we off loaded well and passed the ball beautifully.  Tries by Mukundi x 2. Ollie, Archie, Olit x 2, Oli H, Will, Ted x 4, Andrew, Louka and Luca.  Well done all the boys!

U9 B v Kingswood House Won 90 – 20

A fantastic Chinthurst performance filled with strong running lines, enthusiastic tackling and superb teamwork. The boys worked the ball through the hands well and found where the space was to score a wide variety of spectacular tries. The tries were scored by George 3, Luca 2, Aaryan 4, Phox, Alfie, Charlie 2, Harry 2 and Zac M 2. In defence the boys dug deep, particularly in the second half and made some crunching hits. Well done to all of the boys – this match was a joy to watch!

U10 A v Kingswood House   Won 35-5

The Under 10 A’s opened their rugby season account with a commanding 7-1 (in tries) victory. After a slightly hectic start, we soon found our feet and truly dominated the breakdown scenarios. We came into the game from a long Christmas break and thus we wanted to trial our starting plays; we soon discovered a few flaws which we have been and will continue to iron out in training over the coming weeks. Remember to keep calm, as a former Master i/c of rugby at Chinthurst used to descant ‘rugby is a hectic game best played calmly’. By doing the simple things right (making our tackles, going up in a line, not getting drawn in to the breakdown and remembering there are other options apart from route one) our flow, structure and pace will inevitably improve. A great start boys with lots of positives, keep up the hard work and more wins will come.     WB

U10 B v Kingswood House   Lost 65 - 55

As the score suggests, the crowd got their money’s worth in terms of tries scored. It really was end-to-end stuff and a special mention goes to Mattie who contributed 35 of those points in his 1st ever game. On the flip side, there is plenty to work on in training in terms of taking the ball at pace and defending our own try line. Well done to all the boys, especially those who were representing the school for the first time and those for whom today was their first ever game of rugby.     SF

U11 A v Kingswood House  Won 35-5

A little rusty after the Christmas break, we soon got into our stride and ran purposefully with the ball.  Our tackling improved quickly and we soon negated their big lad!  Following tries by Louis x 2, Charlie 2, George, Hugo and Gabriel we tried to implement a greater passing element to the game and moved the ball well.  Work on securing the ball please!  Well done all.

U11 B Rugby v Kingswood House Won 35-20

A cobweb blowing away performance on a chilly day saw us play some excellent rugby and race into a rapid 20-0 lead, everyone in the squad of 12 got valuable match time on the pitch in this 8 a side game, we tackled very well and need to work on offloading before too much traffic is ahead of us. We also had some handling errors creep in during the second half that I will put down to the chilly conditions. Tries were scored by James H 3, Jude, Barney S, Thomas B and Henry. Well done, onto Claremont next!        MJ

Swimming:

Swimming Gala v RSM

The Year 5 & 6 boys and girls swimming team headed off to the RGS pool for a gala and all swam very well, particularly as for some it was the first time in a longer pool.  The girls swam with great courage and resilience and all gave their all.  There were some impressive swims from the boys who won all of the individual races and all the boys team relays.  Individual wins for Luca, Hugo, Alex, Barnie, Shayen, Henry, James and Frank.

Well done all!

Thank you CPA

Thanks to the wonderful generosity of the CPA we were able to purchase a lovely playhouse for the Kindergarten playground. In the 2 days it has been erected it has been enjoyed by all for all their imaginative role playing wishes! In addition we have now taken delivery of 2 new benches to be placed beside the astro for a more comfortable viewing experience for all parents during matches. We will soon be filling our new planter with some evergreen plants and lovely seasonal blooms. Please keep supporting the CPA at events so we can continue to provide more useful kit around the school for all our pupils, (and parents), to enjoy.
