“Life's most persistent and urgent question is
'What are you doing for others?'“
Martin Luther King, Jr.
On this national day of service, we recognize the incredible volunteers who give their time and energy to our families all year long. Today we highlight the child mentor program at Amethyst Place, which pairs children with caring volunteers from the Kansas City community. Check out their stories below!
Andi and Valencia have a special bond that extends beyond the mentor relationship. "This family has touched my life in a permanent way. Her mother and I have shared great conversations and I've gotten to know her siblings as well. I can't thank them enough for allowing me to be part of their lives". For their first outing together, Andi took Valencia shopping on the Plaza, where Andi also works at Lockton. The name on her office building is Valencia Place. When they noticed that, Andi told Valencia, "It must be God's will for us to be placed together!"
Hannah has been Abby's mentor for the past several months, and loves being able to make a difference by simply spending time with Abby. "I absolutely love the bond I have created with Abby. She really respects and listens to me. She's sassy and spunky, and we get along well." Hannah and Abby keep it simple with their time together: painting their nails, taking Hannah's dog for a walk, or having quiet time and a snack at Hannah's house. "Your activities with your mentee don't have to be extravagant. It's more about the time we spend together!"
Jeff, an Amethyst Place Board Member, mentors DJ. "The kids and moms at Amethyst Place don't have very many positive, supportive men in their lives. I feel like I get to make a difference for DJ's entire family." The two enjoy their time together, no matter what they do. It's a chance for both of them to "escape" their normal day. "He has experienced so many difficult things in his young life. I get to be the person he can talk to about some of those things, and I can tell how important it is to him."
If you want to make a difference in the life of a child and their entire family, please consider volunteering as a mentor in the

The partial government shutdown will impact recipients of food assistance benefits. 100% of Amethyst Place families receive this benefit, formerly known as "food stamps". To reduce the risk of food insecurity at Amethyst Place, we are currently accepting donations of shelf-stable and freezer foods for our emergency food pantry.
