That dirty four-letter word is in the forecast for Saturday.  Snow is expected to overspread our area beginning Saturday afternoon.  With the temperatures below freezing, it will stick as soon as it starts coming down.  Please shop as early as possible on Saturday.  We will be open and ready at 10am,  trying to stay warm in our coveralls, long johns, hats and gloves.  Come and get some good eats for the weekend, and share some warm smiles with us!
We are picking spinach, Asian grees, and kale for Saturday, washing potatoes and sweet potatoes, and boxing everything into insulated containers for the Saturday market.  Just open the lids and be struck by all the springlike green inside!  It does not make a pretty display, but the insulated boxes ensure that your fragile greens arrive home in good condition, capable of refrigerated storage for two weeks or slightly more.  Winter cooking of seasonal vegetables requires some additional imagination and willingness to try new recipes and flavors.  The weather is boring enough.   We need to offset those gray skies with spicy flavors and unusual pairings.  I use a recipe for pork stew that adds orange slices at the end of the cooking period.  That bright, citric zing wakes up the usual combination of meat and starch with a new, bold twist. Utilizing Asian flavorings of soy, and miso on salmon and sablefish is fantastic, and coconut milk with curry turns halibut into something entirely new.  Stirfrying or roasting our root vegetables opens up new possibilities, when seasoned with thyme or rosemary, along with salt and pepper.  Greens can be sauteed with bacon, hoisin sauce, or diluted teriyaki.  Each seasoning change evokes a different culture and awakes the tastebuds.  After all, with cold and snow this weekend, we might as well COOK!
The Freight Station Farmers Market is open Tuesdays, and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Vendors vary depending on the day.
