Waitsfield Elementary School Rocks!

January 10, 2019
Thanks to Sugarbush for sending a crew to talk with us last Friday about on mountain safety. Ski patrol had quite a time getting that moose on a sled! Please ask one of our students what they talked about. We look forward to putting their advice into action on the mountain SOON!

Dear Friends and Families,
You are likely aware that in 2017, our school officially transitioned to be part of a unified district: Harwood Unified Union School District. This district, which includes Duxbury, Fayston, Moretown, Waitsfield, Warren and Waterbury is overseen by a fourteen member school board. While the day to day business of the schools is carried out by the employees of the district, the school board is responsible for the broad oversight of the district. The work of a school board includes:
● Identify and build a shared a vision for education in the community.
● Develop and adopt a budget.
● Establish school-related policies.
● Hire and work with a superintendent to lead and manage the district.
● Monitor progress toward the vision, and assure accountability for results.
● Engage the community in supporting the education of students.

In the near future, the HUUSD board will provide direction to our schools on important topics such as keeping our schools viable with declining enrollment, maintaining vibrant schools while keeping costs feasible for our communities and ensuring our overall system is effectively supporting all learners in gaining the skills they need to live productive, happy lives as adults.

I share all this information because the HUUSD board needs YOU. A three year seat on this board is opening this March. Candidates for this position must submit a petition to run by Monday, January 28th.

There is challenging, but extremely important and meaningful work to be done by the HUUSD board and our towns need thoughtful representatives to help move it forward. PLEASE consider running for this position, and/or asking those whom you know to have skills that would be well matched for this position, to run. Further information about the board position can be found online here, or by contacting me or current Waitsfield representatives to the board Christine Sullivan <csullivan@wwsu.org> or Rob Williams <rwilliams@wwsu.org>.

Respectfully,
Kaiya

Community Announcements
Please note that the opportunities/events listed below are not specifically endorsed or screened by school staff. As always, families should use their own standards and review processes to determine appropriate activities.

Mad River Valley Little League – Youth baseball for Boys and Girls 4-12 years old.        We are excited to announce that registration for 2019 Little League season is open.  We have some exciting changes for 2019.  We are creating a new softball field.   This field will be used for girls’ softball and also for T-ball.   As soon as the snow melts, we will be installing the field.   We are excited about our new girls’ softball program created by Director of Softball, Mike Nagle.
Also, we hope to improve our T-Ball program by getting the kids on a real field.   The all clay infield will be great for T-Ball, as we can adjust the base path length to fit our young players.   To register, please click the link to our registration site.
The league has 6 different levels of play:
T-Ball for 4-6 year old boys/girls
Farm League (coach pitch) for 7-8 year olds
American League (minors) for 9-10 year olds
National League (majors) for 11-12 year olds
Softball (minors) for 8-10 year old girls
Softball (majors) for 11-12 year old girls
The T-ball and Farm leagues use a T-ball, which is softer to prevent injury.
There is some flexibility, depending on skill level, to ‘play up’ to older leagues.
The season runs from May 4th (practice starts earlier) until mid-June.  All Star teams (optional) run later into the summer for the American and National Leagues.
-Registration is open now @ www.madriverbaseball.com
-In person registration night: Thursday, March 14th 6:00PM @ Waitsfield Elementary School.
