Self-Management
Dear parents/carers

Happy New year to you all.

I have spent time in assembly this week talking to students in years 7-9 about self-management, whilst my colleague, Mrs Hall, has spoken with years 10 and 11.

I used a very short YouTube clip to illustrate my point. It came from a premiership football match between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur just before Christmas. During the game a member of crowd made the decision to throw a plastic bottle at a player and the bottle hit the player on the head. The person was subsequently identified and charged by the police.

The key theme of the assemblies was that while school, and indeed life outside of school, will afford students amazing opportunities, the only person who can take them is themselves. Linked to this, and the reason for showing the video clip, was the message that we are all able to self-manage our actions and that what we do, we have control over, and it will ultimately impact on our future.

The year 10 and 11 assembly was different, but with the same message. Mrs Hall spoke with students about their use of GCSE Pod to support their journey towards GCSE examination success. As of today John Hanson students have accessed and viewed over 10,000 pods since September. This is a vastly greater number than other schools of our size. This shows very clearly that the self-management message is one that many year 10 and 11 students are hearing and taking on board.

While ultimate academic success is, and will continue to be, an essential element of what we strive to achieve at John Hanson, developing skills such as self-management rank right up there in the list of important attributes we hope all John Hanson students will develop in their 5 years with us, and take with them on their journeys to success in the future.

Enjoy the weekend with your children.

Annual science trip to The Natural History Museum.

Recently 160 year 7s embarked on the annual science trip to The Natural History Museum. Students had the chance to get ‘hands on’ with some of the exhibits in the investigate centre were they were able to practice their scientific enquiry skills! We also spent time looking around the mammals, dinosaurs, earthquakes, human biology and the Darwin centre. All students have collected information that they will be using in their science lessons over the next two weeks.

All of year 7 will be writing an essay on what they learned about The Natural History Museum with the best entries winning some fantastic prizes. Winners will be announced after Christmas and prizes awarded during science lessons for the best!

Rotary Youth Speaks 2019

John Hanson is proud to be hosting ‘Rotary Youth Speaks 2019’ on Wednesday 16th January. We have two rookie teams in the competition:  Elsie,  Jordan and Margaret are our intermediates, and Hannah, Maisie and Emily our seniors. They will be competing against Harrow Way, Winton and Rookwood to decide which school goes forward to the regional events.

Needless to say, the teams will be a little nervous and they would appreciate your support! The event begins at 5pm sharp, so please be in your seat, in the Hall by 4.45. The event should be finished by 7.30pm.

Year 8 visit to Winchester University.
On Wednesday 24 year 8 students spent the day thinking about their future and finding out about university. Accompanied by university ambassadors they took part in a range of activities which included a tour of the campus. They attended one session by a politics student demonstrating the techniques used to help students to discuss controversial issues.

I was incredibly impressed by the maturity with which they discussed issues associated with freedom of speech and use of social media. Students particularly enjoyed their visit to the sport's labs where they rotated around a series of stations which tested various aspects of their physical abilities including blood pressure tests; standing jumps; reaction speeds and grip tests.

'definitely worth going as we could see how life could be at university' Phoebe Trimmer.

'it was interesting to hear other people's opinions because the answer can seem so obvious to you but then hearing others defend their views can change what you think' Jordan Sparrow

CyberFirst Girls Competition

The GCHQ (the governments lead agency on cyber security) have launched a competition aimed at year 8 girls across the UK and Northern Ireland. This competition has been launched to try and encourage girls to think about cyber security as a career. The competition tasks place over one week (21st -28th Jan)  and involves a series of online challenges that the girls will need to solve in teams.

There are for categories that will be covered:

  • Networking
  • Logic & Coding
  • Cyber Security
  • Cryptography

The girls answer as many questions as they can across all for categories earning badges along the way. Each category has three levels of difficulty. As the girls progress more challenges are unlocked. Challenges can be worked on at school, at lunch, in lessons or in the evening, either with the team or individually as part of the team.

The top the teams complete in a face-to-face Grand Finale. Winners receive £1,000 for school computer equipment and individual prizes too.

This is a great opportunity for students and we would ask that you encourage and support your daughter if they are taking part in this competition.

We hope the above information is useful.

John Hanson Top of the League

Netball has become a really popular extra-curricular activity over the past few years at John Hanson School, with the netball club getting between 60-70 students every week!

Their hard-work and dedication has paid off as the Year 9, 10 and  11 leagues have just ended and John Hanson have come top of the league in all age groups.

In fact, all of the teams have never lost a match during all of their years at the school.

Mrs Vant, who runs the club and the teams said “I am delighted with the success of the netball teams.  They have such passion for the game, and love playing.  They are a real credit to our school”

John Hanson also run an annual netball tour to Liddington, where the students get to play other teams from across the UK over a weekend of fun and games.  45 girls have signed up to go on this year’s trip in May.

Hannah Taylor, Year 11 team captain said “I really love playing netball.  We have been given lots of opportunities to play netball at school, and we have been to watch Superleague netball matches where we have met England netball players which has really inspired me”.

The Year 8’s begin their league at the end of January and are hopeful they can also hold on to their undefeated record from last year.  The newly developed Year 7 team also start their quest to keep John Hanson’s unbeaten record at the end of the month.
