Monthly Data Download

In developing TYSA's marijuana position statement, we reviewed YDS data on lifetime marijuana use among 7-12th graders. Despite low rates of use in middle school, high school rates steadily increase from 9th-12th grade. With recreational legalization on the horizon, youth use will likely continue to increase regardless of age restrictions.

ATTENTION TYSA MEMBERS: HELP NEEDED!!

TYSA is conducting the OASAS Young Adult Survey among 18-25 olds who live, work, or go to school in Staten Island. The anonymous surveys assess substance use behaviors, which will help TYSA align our strategies accordingly. PLEASE SHARE THE SURVEY!

Workgroup Updates

Social Norms

- TYSA held a Parents You Matter Workshop with Assemblywoman Malliotakis at Petrides High School facilitated by Carol Pisapia and Joanne McKernan. Another PYM was held at St. Clare's School Family Association Parent meeting, facilitated by Anne DeMarzo and Terry Troia.
- Members suggested that we work to develop holiday messaging because our Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day and Prom campaigns have been successful. We also proposed creating concurrent youth and adult messaging as opposed to the majority of our sticker shock campaigns that generally target one audience at a time.

- The group discussed ways to expand the reach of our parent workshops as in many cases, very few parents attend. We collaborated with Assemblywoman Malliotakis, whose team did very diligent outreach including district wide mailers, and only a handful of participants showed up. Ideas including live streams and internet based modules.
- Members also proposed adapting SMART Recovery’s parent communication tip sheet to hand out at our PYM workshops as it provides practical strategies for parents to interact with their children in a healthy way.
Several partners, such as Candace Crupi from Carl's Recovery Center and Luke Nasta from Camelot, made an appearance in this OASAS PSA called, "We can't lose anyone else."

Opioid

- The Just Ask campaign, efforts around safe disposal, school based prevention and TYSA were all mentioned in a special edition of the SI Advance!
- Workgroup members continued to discuss next steps for the roll out of the Just Ask campaign. We decided to target urgent cares, dentists and orthopedists for our clinical outreach as these populations often are left out of other clinical detailing efforts.
the group reviewed its existing priorities and strategies to determine areas of focus for 2019.
- The viral hepatitis program of the DOHMH presented on their most recent annual report which indicates that young people 0-24 have high rates of HCV infection in NYC. People who use drugs are at increased risk of contracting HCV and so the group brainstormed strategies to align TYSA and work to prevent HCV. The group proposed educating physicians on HCV identification and treatment and linking substance use treatment programs with HCV education and testing.

Policy & Advocacy

- Workgroup chairs, Adrienne and Jazmin attended a meeting with Shelly Weitzman, Lisa Thompson and Tom Feeny of the governor’s office to present TYSA’s Policy Agenda. Overall, the meeting went well and the governor’s representatives were impressed with SI’s cohesion and collaboration. Notably, TYSA is one of the few groups to demonstrate the need to address alcohol in the community.

- Workgroup members worked to plan TYSA’s annual Legislative Briefing, to be held January 18th at at the Hilton. At this briefing, we will update legislators and government agencies on TYSA successes to date, make our policy agenda asks, and provide time for attendees to provide updates from their offices.
- TYSA met with Assemblyman Reilly and Assemblyman Fall to discuss how we can work together to continue to prevent and reduce rates of youth & young adult substance use across Staten Island.

School-Based

- The group explored ways to incorporate the opioid athletic policy into a broader Opioid Prevention Programming strategy for school sports teams. They suggested tying opioid prevention programming for teams into the existing Opioid “Just Ask” campaign, which would educate coaches and encouraging students and parents to ask their providers, coaches etc. about opioid prescriptions and pain management alternatives.
- Geoff DeBery facilitated a Professional Development Workshop for Petrides High School staff to build the capacity of those who work and interact with youth daily to feel confident in helping prevent substance use in school and at home. Participants learned reasons youth use substances, signs and symptoms of substance use, and were introduced to school protocol around substance use and resources in the school.
- The group finalized priorities & strategies:
Priorities:
1. Support programming that promotes protective factors & mitigates risk factors.
2. Community-wide recognition of universal Social-Emotional Learning as a key mechanism for substance use prevention.
Strategies:
1. Resource identification & alignment
2. Substance use prevention best practices for student athletes
3. Advocate for investment in proactive prevention & early intervention
4. Educate schools & community about social-emotional learning

Continuum of Care

- CoC is charged with identifying training needs for TYSA members and SI programs. Peer supervision was suggested as an area that would benefit from in-depth training and support.
- The group discussed next steps for the TYSA CoC workgroup to function as SICASA. Members reached out to both OASAS and DOHMH to ensure that the workgroup is suitable to take over SICASA and received positive confirmation.
- CoC hosted the first official quarterly SI CASA meeting in January. During the meeting they discussed peer integration, introduced Jordan as the Peer Integration Coordinator, and outlined his plans to meet with providers 1 to 1.  Project Hospitality & Silberstein shared their experience with the DOHMH process in approving their budget to add a peer. The VBP conversation was tabled, as OASAS and DOHMH could not attend.

Youth Engagement

- TYSA facilitated Bystander Intervention workshops with students at St. Marks ALC and students used what they learned to create their own skits and posters of how to successfully intervene.
- Through a recent partnership with Pathways to Graduation, TYSA facilitated 3 workshops with young adults with the help of the RCDA and CHASI. The workshops involved information on the drug landscape in Staten Island, discussions on social norms of substance use, and guest speakers including a Peer in recovery.
- TYSA met with Staten Island Student Advocate Association high school students at Petrides to train them on a TYSA alcohol presentation for youth. They will be presenting it to middle school students during a substance use awareness month at Petrides.
