When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.

The except above is from the reading from Isaiah 43:1-7 for this Sunday.  This passage is meant to reassure us that we are not alone. And I know that we say this a lot, but I think that we truly need to hear it. Life can get hectic. We are multitasking the majority of our time. And sometimes it gets to be a bit much. At Woodcliff, we have a ton of stuff going on (which is great), but it can also get stressful.

This half of the year sees us spend some more time, energy and resources in hearing from a diverse set of voices. Voices that offer different interpretations of scripture, offer up different experiences of the church and its work. I believe that the words spoken and energy spent can be challenging. As we hear stories of Treaty 7, Truth and Reconciliation, or as we hear stories from the pulpit of being marginalized by virtue of whom they love, this has the potential to be a lot to take in. These experiences have the chance to stir up anxiety or uncertainty.  I get that. It is possible to wonder: “What about me/us?”  As the Church, we are called to speak truth to power and to love our neighbor as ourselves.  And believe me, this is not always easy, nor is it usually comfortable. However, I would encourage you to again take a look at the scripture passage from Isaiah.  God is with us, no matter the rivers we need to cross, no matter how strung the current is and no matter how high that fire burns. God is with you.

Join me in dipping a toe into the water.
Blessings,
Rev. Eric

Woodcliff Council Meeting Summary - January 8, 2019

At our regular meeting on January 8, 2019 Council members met to address various business items with the majority of the meeting spent discussing a second draft budget for Woodcliff. Council is delighted to say we have passed a draft budget to be presented to the congregation at the ACM on March 17, 2019.

Other highlights from the Council meeting include:

-    We are truly thankful for the abundance that surrounds us as our givings were up at the end of December enabling Woodcliff to finish the year in a surplus position.

-   Rev. Eric reported that the three Christmas Services were very well attended and hopefully we will see some of those people returning on a regular basis.

-   Two TVs and mounts were purchased for the church to be installed on the stairs and downstairs to inform visitors of the happenings at Woodcliff.

-   Opportunities are being explored to find new long-term renters at Woodcliff.

-    The Nominations Committee continues to search for new individuals to fill the positions of Nominations Chair, Vice-Chair and Chair (or Co-Chair) of Council, Regional Representative for 2019 as well as a Treasurer in 2020. Information on these opportunities will be displayed in the Narthex.

-    The 2018 gift of a $15,000 grant from Flair Foundation will become part of the Legacy Gift fund for Woodcliff, to be spent on a capital project in the future.

-    Five Woodcliff policies relating to Technology/Communications/Emergency Response were accepted to be presented to the congregation at our ACM and we expect the sixth one relating to Privacy / Duty of Care will also be ready by March. The Property Policy will also be circulated to Council by our next meeting with an intention to be completed by the ACM.

Multi-faith Spaces for Students

Our gifts for Mission & Service offer students an opportunity to gather for a meal in a multi-faith, safe space at places like the large Halifax campus of Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. If you visit Dalhousie’s Multifaith Centre on Monday night, you will be greeted with a free hot meal provided by United Church chaplain the Rev. Robyn Brown-Hewitt, and so much more!

In the midst of a large university campus, the Monday Night Meal creates an inviting and intimate space in which chaplains greet students from diverse backgrounds by name. Even the food available (including vegetarian, halal, and kosher options) reflects an intentional effort to support respectful, intercultural and multi-faith community bonds. As they share soup and conversation, students build trust with one another and the chaplains. They share stories and opinions, including personal beliefs and spiritual perspectives.

During special seasons on the inter-faith calendar, the Multifaith Centre student assistants occasionally take the lead, contributing food and related traditions that are essential to their faith. At the Monday Night Meal, there’s an open table and a warm welcome!

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.
