Spring 2019 Field Notes
2019 is off to a big start! We've traveled from one side of North America to the other to share our collaborative work in Kyrgyzstan and Nigeria, visited Kyrgyzstan to continue working with Doctors Without Borders and the Kyrgyz government to plan an environmental health project, and were honored with a national Achievement Award. Thank you for being part of the stories!

Environmental Security @ Norwich University
Environment, Climate, and National Security: Turning the Tide to a More Secure Planet
Environmental Security is not a new concept, but it is an inherently broad and interdisciplinary one. We are involved with a working group exploring the topic, bringing a perspective on the complex ways that environmental pollution, artisanal mining, climate change, and conflict are interrelated. This is a collaborative effort between the Association for Environmental Health Sciences (AEHS), and the Center for Global Resilience and the Peace and War Center at Norwich University (NU).

Our Executive Director, Dr. Casey Bartrem, participated in an expert panel discussion last month, sharing the stories of communities TIFO works with - who are truly at the forefront of climate change, security, and resource extraction - with other panelists and the NU audience. More than ever before, the environmental health challenges we face today require cross-discipline collaborations and solutions that are developed at a local level.

If you missed the live stream of the event, a recorded version is available

Human Health Risk Assessment in
Batken Province, Kyrgyzstan
Since 2016, TIFO has worked in Kyrgyzstan to develop and support an environmental health and safety program for Doctors Without Borders staff, who are living and working in two Soviet-era mining and smelting towns. This year, TIFO, the Kyrgyz Government, and Doctors Without Borders are collaborating to investigate community health risks related to the local mercury mine and smelter. TIFO traveled to Kyrgyzstan in March to plan 2019 activities with project partners.

TIFO will make two more trips to Kyrgyzstan this year, including a month-long intensive sampling effort later this summer. We're excited for the developing partnership with Kyrgyz authorities and the chance to work with local and federal environmental health experts in addition to the TIFO volunteers involved in the project. Stay tuned for more updates on the project in Kyrgyzstan later this year.
Women in Science...
on the Palouse!
The Palouse region of Idaho is TIFO's home base - we're grateful to be part of such a globally-minded community. When we're not in the field, we love to participate in regional events in and around the Moscow area.

Next week, we'll join the Prominent Women and Science event hosted by
University of Idaho's Randall Women in Science: Inclusion, Diversity, Equality Alliance. TIFO is founded, run, and advised by scientists from dozens of disciplines, so we're thrilled to be part of the event. And it's a community event, so please join for great conversations about working in STEM locally and globally.

Details: Wednesday, May 1st at the Bruce Pitman Center, University of Idaho Campus. Panel discussion @ 330 pm, social at 5 pm. More info
here - and we'll send a reminder next week!
AEHS Achievement Award and 29th Annual Conference
Above, TIFO co-founders Ian von Lindern and Margrit von Braun share stories from TIFO's work in Nigeria and Kyrgyzstan at the 29th Annual AEHS Conference Poster Session.

TIFO was honored by the Association for Environmental Health and Sciences (AEHS) with an Achievement Award at the March 2019 conference in San Diego, CA. The award is given to organizations or individuals making lasting contributions to the field of environmental health. We are grateful to AEHS for the nomination and selection for this award! TIFO's work couldn't happen without community leadership and our network, volunteers, partners, and donors.
