January events news

16th January - Reading - Blythe Hill Tavern.

'Of Mice and Men' by John Steinbeck

We will be continuing the reading of the American classic that we started in December. It is not necessary to have been at the first reading, as we will explain what has happened so far.

Published in 1937, it tells the story of George Milton and Lennie Small, two displaced migrant ranch workers, who move from place to place in California in search of new job opportunities during the Great Depression in the United States.

23rd January - Playwriting group - The Honor Oak

The first meeting of the Playwriting group will take place on 23rd January at the Honor Oak Pub.

Everyone is welcome to join the group. We are all enthusiastic amateurs who want to help improve each other's writing. We meet to read through the pieces we have written on the subject agreed at the last meeting. After discussing each in turn and offering suggestions.

The theme that we agreed on at the last meeting was 'the end of the party.' There's no restrictions on length and the theme is open to your own interpretations. Don't worry if you haven't written anything, come along and help us with the readings and you can be involved in deciding what theme we use for the next subject. If you have written something but are unable to make the 23rd and would be happy for us to read it, please email it to us and we'll read it.

30th January - Reading - Venue to be confirmed.

'And Then There Were None' by Agatha Christie.

Ten strangers, apparently with little in common, are lured to an island mansion off the coast of Devon by the mysterious U.N.Owen. Over dinner, a record begins to play, and the voice of an unseen host accuses each person of hiding a guilty secret. That evening, former reckless driver Tony Marston is found murdered by a deadly dose of cyanide.

The tension escalates as the survivors realise the killer is not only among them but is preparing to strike again… and again...

Join us to read Agatha Christie's best selling piece and potentially our next production.

What do you want to do?

As well as producing plays, we host readings and mini shows. Do you want to organise one?

At readings, a group of Players simply read through a play. As well as being a fun way to spend an evening, a reading helps us gauge interest in a play - we decided to produce Rope in spring 2015 following a successful reading.

Mini shows are whatever you want them to be. In the past they have featured readings from plays and novels, storytelling, impro and sketches. Some of the Players have used them to showcase their own work.

If you think you might like to arrange a reading, mini show or something we haven't thought of, please contact us.

Thank you to our sponsors

We are a volunteer led, not-for-profit community group and couldn't do it without the help of our sponsors.
