Get out of your own head

There's a time to think and there's a time to act. And these days, I'm all about getting s**t done! With the shirt to prove it.

You see, since I've been working from home, I've switched from an overstimulating open space office to living mostly inside my head.

This big change means I now receive a lot less external input which gives my mind time and space to go on wildly diverse paths. What a slippery slope that is!

As much as I value reflection and thorough analysis, there's no glory in overthinking. It makes you feel stuck, not good enough and keeps you from getting it done, whatever it may be.

I know this because this is what I've been struggling with it the past 2-3 weeks.

The only way to get unstuck, to carry on, to start doing so you can get results (and kick imposter syndrome's butt) is to ship stuff.

This is the advice I received from both my closest friends and my mentor. It's good advice because it works. When I changed my focus, I changed the story I was telling myself.

Of course, you've heard this before. It's not new. However, knowing these things is not the same as practicing them. That's where most of us get stuck.

Talking to friends, colleagues, mentors, a therapist or a coach is one way to overcome this hurdle.

"The meaning of life does not come in the shape of a story with a role for me to play. [...]
Almost no story manages to hold out when you think in very big terms."

Acquiring a new mental tool can be another way to tackle it.

I found one of these tools during a serious session of overthinking.

I'm not yet that good at living with uncertainty and the tension it generates. I find it one of the more difficult lesson to internalize, worth the effort nonetheless.

In this context, Yuval Noah Harari's (Sapiens, Homo Deus) idea - quoted above - altered my perspective. I noticed I had gotten so caught up in my problems and fears - real or imaginary - that I had forgotten the world isn't built around me

On the contrary, I'm the one responsible to understand how it works and how I can thrive in it. What's more, it is a-okay if I there are things I cannot grasp.

Mental tools like this one are very helpful to me when I try to figure out what the best course of action is. They help peel away at my biases, making my mind a bit sharper and a tad more focused.

I hope they do the same for you.
