President's Message

Sisters of the Cloth,

Happy New Year! Did you get everything finished for your Christmas gifts? Not to worry as Christmas comes every year and that quilt will still be a perfect gift next year.

I needed to shovel out my studio after the holiday season as I couldn't find anything after the whirlwind holiday. Many of us think of cleaning and organizing at the start of a brand new year of possibilities. You can't honour that creative buzz if you can't find your tools. To that end we are going to try something new at guild. On the back long table (where we used to put the Show and Share items) there will be a sign, Free. You can place any item there that you no longer want/need. We all know that one person's trash is another's treasure. Any other guild member can take that item home. The only caveat is that you must check to see if your item found a new home, and if it didn't, you must return it to your home to be disposed of. We can't leave stuff at the church that needs to be thrown out.

Topic shift: Your executive has been thinking of planning a trip to Quilt Canada in Ottawa, Friday, June 15 to Saturday, June 16. Very preliminary quotes would put the cost at around $126 a person. This would cover your admission, coach, driver, and day passes. You would still need to pay for a hotel that we would book as a group and get a better rate, but I think you would need to budget around a $100 for that. That leaves meals, classes if you wanted, and the lovely merchant mall to cover. So, what I need you to do is think about this and we will talk at the January meeting to see if we have enough interest to go forward with this outing. We can tap another guild to share expenses if we are on the cusp of enough members to go. Also, the executive member that was planning this trip is unable to commit to it any further. Give some thought to whether you want to go AND whether you would like to be the organizer for this trip.

Just take it one stitch at a time.

Quilt Show 2020 Steering Committee Update

Our next committee meeting will be at 7 p.m., Monday, February 4, 2019 at Monica's home, 3531 Regional Road 57 in Caesarea.  Please note the change in location.

We're looking for volunteers to co-ordinate our Memory Lane space (honouring guild members who have passed away since our last show) as well as Quilt Registrars (collection and registering all items submitted for display at the show).

If you are interested in either of these positions or if you would like to assist with any other aspects of our show, please contact Monica Wolfe (monica.e.wolfe@gmail.com)

Port Perry Patchers UFO Challenge 2018-19

I hope your holidays were restful and full of family, fun and festivities.  However, with an extra month added for your UFO project, it is hoped that you also found some time to complete your second item, #1 on your list.  This project is due at the January meeting which is rapidly approaching.  Please remember to visit me at the UFO table to register your completed item and sign your ballots for the June Prize Draw.

While I personally did not register any UFOs, I have been recording my accomplishments as I complete them.  With my luck, I would win the Grand Prize in June and be tarred and feathered!  Still, I must confess the euphoria I experienced last year as I finished my six challenges continues this year, prize or no prize!

You need to be feeling great about this challenge or it needs to be tweaked to suit your individual needs.  I would be happy to make some suggestions.  Remember, if you are unable to complete any selected UFO on time it is still eligible to be registered, if finished, for a single ballot any of the months up to and including June.

Hope to see you at our January meeting!

Program Schedule

January - Playing with Rulers – Quilting on your Domestic Machines

A fun hands on meeting, beginning with demonstrations by Carolyn Birnie, our guest from the Markham Guild. A chance to try out those Westlee Rulers and the new rulers from Angela Walters by Creative Grids. If you have rulers, and want to bring your machine along to play, please do so. Break those rulers out of the plastic and go for it!! If you don’t have rulers, but want to bring a machine and try some of those available for playing, just remember you need to borrow or buy a suitable ruler foot.

We will have capacity for only so many machines at a time, so this is a good night to buddy up with a friend and plan to share machines!  Bring those power bars along to help us manage set-up !  Sylvia will also bring her machine and some rulers to share, so there will be an opportunity to give it a try!

Sew Have Fun, one of our long time sponsors, will be joining in the fun, and will be vending the products as well, so a great chance to get up close with a new tool.  www.sewhavefun.ca
