"We’re done being the disrupters....our brand is now strong....people recognize us in the airport." Don't have much context around the quote, but that's UCF AD White at a Business of Sports event in Orlando on Friday. (link)
Minnesota AD Coyle points to Big Ten peers Wisconsin ($143M) & Iowa ($130M) as budget markers he'd like the Gophers to get to as its 2017-18 numbers look to have balanced at $122M. Coyle is well aware FB attendance dollars could be one way to close the gap, "We have taken a hard look at how we price our tickets, our scholarship seating, and those are things we’ll continue to evaluate. [...] We always focus on attendance, whether it be hockey, basketball, baseball, we worry about attendance. Our goal is to earn people back." Another primary focus for Coyle in 2019 will continue to be creating the best possible student-athlete experience. (link)
LSU MBB HC Wade doesn't think the new NET ratings formula makes sense, "The fifth most important category in the NET is your margin of victory, and it’s capped at 10 points. The second most important is your offensive and defensive efficiency, and there is no cap. Well, to (get) your offensive and defensive efficiency where you need it to be, you need to run the score up on people. So they’re going to have to readjust the formula because they don’t want people to blow people out, but they’re basically telling people to blow people out because that’s weighted more than the 10-point (cap)." Wade continues with thoughts on why the NET is an advantage for good non-power conference squads who aren't "playing as difficult of teams. In our league, you get bogged down into tractor pulls in the 50s and 60s and your efficiencies aren’t going to be as good." (link)
As an institution, Oklahoma is tightening its belt. But, FB HC Riley's paycheck is set to increase nicely with his new deal. OU Prez Gallogly's: "OU is one of those elite schools that the athletic program actually brings in positive cash to the university. [...] In business, you have to pay for talent, and at a university you have to pay for talent. For instance, if you’re going to get one of the absolute top-flight researchers like we have in our weather center … we have multiple people there that are absolutely the very best of the best. They’re working in a state-of-the-art facility, and they’re paid in a very competitive way, because they’re the best at what they do. And they bring in huge research dollars to our university." (link); Also included in the Gallogly article is a link to Oklahoma Athletics' 2017-18 annual report. Not exactly fresh & new, but don't think I had seen it before. (link)
Can sharply-worded social media responses by an organizational leader be justified if a fan has continually been negative toward the team? English Premier League side Fulham had exactly that happen yesterday as Vice Chairman Khan told a complaining supporter via Twitter to, "Go to hell." More from Khan, the son of Jacksonville Jaguars' namesake owner, "This wasn't my 1st twitter interaction with this fan. When times are down, he's on me, but even less than 2 weeks after promotion he complained at me. Thanks to our fans that stand by the club. Come on Fulham." (link)

Sounds like there's a senior-level reorganization underway at Notre Dame & longtime communications administrator Heisler, who was serving as Senior Assoc. AD, has exited. Heisler to the South Bend Tribune's Moor, "It’s been a great run here over four decades. (Wife) Karen’s and my kids have grown up with Notre Dame athletics. It was anything but a 9-to-5 job, considering the nights and weekends, so the whole family became immersed in that lifestyle. Given that there was always another event on the horizon and another freshman class enrolling, it was an ongoing reality show that played out 24 hours a day. So there was always another great story to be told." (link)
Michigan AD Manuel ok's the hire of former USA Gymnastics official Faehn as a coaching consultant for UM's Women's Gymnastics program. Though never implicated, Faehn is believed to be one of the first USAG leader who learned of the Nassar allegations. Manuel: "After our exhaustive due diligence, we felt comfortable that coach Faehn reported all information available to her regarding Larry Nassar and that she cooperated fully, including voluntarily participating in all investigations and offering testimony before Congress." (link); Manuel's external team wants to make it plenty clear an internet show covering Wolverines FB is not a credentialed media outlet & its host has no access to the program. In question is the 'Michigan Football Report' that Assoc. AD for FB Communications Ablauf says is "riddled with inaccuracies and not based upon any direct access or communications with our team, coaches or other personnel." (link)
Back to Notre Dame for a quick note as multiple reports point to Fighting Irish FB AC Denson becoming the new HC at Charleston Southern. (link); The Toledo Blade runs through emails & records in Bowling Green's FB HC search that ended with former Boston College OC Loeffler. CAA's Dowdle pushed former Florida/Colorado State HC McElwain, former Ball State HC Lembo, Cal OC Baldwin & former Austin Peay (now Charlotte HC) Healy, among others. Lots more names mentioned. Looks like Turnkey aided the process for a $40K fee & $4K more in expenses. (link)
Bakersfield.com's Feinberg writes on the challenge Cal State Bakersfield faces with its coming move to the Big West, "While the school’s headline program, men’s basketball, could be competitive right from the get-go, its non-revenue sports will likely be challenged considerably on the field of play." Roadrunners AD Siegfried knows some facility upgrades are needed, especially in Baseball, while others, like Volleyball, should be able to excel immediately. Siegfried: "When you make transitions, there is that period you have to get up to speed in regards to competition. I feel we’re much more established and sustainable than we were just a couple years ago. Scholarships, facilities, personnel, everything. However, we need to take it to the next level." (link)
Sticking with the facilities topic, Colorado State says its new Moby Loft beer deck should be open by a home MBB tip with Fresno State on the 26th of this month. Rams AD Parker: "Until we have all the paperwork in place and everything, I can’t absolutely guarantee it, but that’s the target." Parker also says if interest in the new space is high there's already been talks of doing the same at the other end of the arena. (link); Illinois State is planning to upgrade seats inside Redbird Arena. Better upholstery, cup holders & additional leg room are all on the docket. (link)
More on the beef between College of Charleston & former Baseball HC Heath, who is now the pitching coach at UT Martin. Heath says simply, "I've moved on." Heath's attorney, in reference to the university, "I generally have found that people who try their cases in the newspapers are afraid to try them in court." The Post & Courier piece goes on to detail all the allegations raised against Heath by former student-athletes & staff members, as well as Heath's against the institution & its process of hiring a new skipper. CofC provides a standard statement, "As a general policy, the College does not comment on pending litigation." (link)
Also Noticed: Crazy, but yesterday was already the mid-point of the college basketball season. (link); Bullard, a Kentucky-based company that invented the hard had 100 years ago, celebrated that anniversary at yesterday's MBB game between Kentucky and Vanderbilt by attempting to break the Guinness World Record for most people wearing a hard hat at one place. Those participating had to keep the hat on and stay seated for five minutes. (link); Former USC FB AC McNair hired by the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers as running backs coach. McNair, as you know, has been at odds with the NCAA for a number of years, finds his way back to the sidelines. (link)
