This WEEK

From the Head...

Now that the term is back in full flow and we have all settled into our daily routines, I am delighted to be able to teach a few lessons again.

This week I have had the absolute pleasure of teaching 6W an English and 4F a Maths lesson, two very different subjects but both equally gratifying.  6W are currently working around Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone and are completely enthralled with the text.  Choosing engaging, inspiring copy is key to motivating the children in English lessons and something the entire staff consider when planning.  This particular lesson with 6W involved writing a letter in the style of a ‘Howler’, a magical correspondence which reads the message out loud giving the recipient a good telling off.  As you can imagine the children had great fun composing these!  I was not only impressed by the children’s vocabulary but their ability to adapt their style of writing to the audience.  I also included additional criteria such as using subordinating conjunctions and parenthesis which the children all used to add detail and interest to their writing.  Well done 6W for such creative work and also to Mrs Winchester who has obviously been teaching you so well.

Class 4F demonstrated what confident and capable mathematicians they all are during my Maths session with them on Tuesday.  The lesson covered adding and subtracting money, which meant that they had to ensure that the decimal point was in the correct place.  Looking at the amount whilst making sure their answer made sense is a sensible way of checking this.  Many moved on to real life application of this skill by solving word problems, having to first determine if they needed to add or subtract.  The children worked exceptionally hard and challenged themselves with all achieving the targets I had set them.  It was rewarding to see how driven and motivated they are and how much they are enjoying Maths.  Thank you 4F, I loved teaching you and another well done to Miss Fraser who has helped and encouraged you all to be happy mathematicians.

I am really looking forward to teaching more lessons over the coming weeks.  The children at Chinthurst are a pleasure to educate and truly inspiring.

Best Wishes
Cathy Trundle

The Adventures of Early Years..

Reception Continue to Learn about Polar Region Animals

Ice:

The children thoroughly enjoyed feeling what it’s like being in the South pole and North pole, touching small pieces of ice and a large one like an iceberg. As they sensed the ice, they predicted which piece would melt first and observed the changes over time. They also found where the Arctic and Antarctica are on the world map.

Igloo:

In the role play area, the children had an opportunity to get in with the polar region animals and their own pebble penguins. It was very tricky to make an igloo for a polar bear using sugar cubes but they made a nice and cosy home for him.

Maths:

Building onto a group of ten with extra ones learnt last week, the children focused on patterns in 2s.
Using the Numicon shapes, they grouped even numbers into ‘flat family’ and odd ones into ‘bumpy jump family’ and enjoyed playing jump and flat games.
It was also good fun to use a mirror in maths lessons to investigate symmetry. They experimented with finding the lines and were excited to find out some shapes are not symmetrical.

This Week's Other Stories..

Sewing Club

The children are really enjoying the new sewing club, making some fabulous items using  their new hand stitching skills

Church Assembly

Class 6B

This morning's church assembly was hosted by 6B. As this is Mr Beadle's class, expectations for flamboyance and excitement were high and we were not disappointed! The theme of the assembly was freedom. 6B talked about two famous people who fought for freedom, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King. The class then put up a replica of the Berlin Wall down the middle of the church. They told each side what their lives were going to be like. The people in the "East" were not happy! Everyone cheered when the wall came down. Thank you 6B for an informative and entertaining assembly.

Chint Sport

Hockey:

U8 v Aberdour  Won 2-0

Our first hockey match ever and what a fantastic game it was! The girls dominated play and consistently had the ball around Aberdour’s goal. There was some excellent displays of passing the ball through their defence and some lovely movement up the pitch, using the dribbling skills we have worked hard on in training sessions. I know the girls will continue to work hard on their passing and tactics and I’m very much looking forward to our next match!     JF

U11 v  Aberdour   Won 1-0

This was our first match of the season! After only a few teaching sessions I was very impressed with the fantastic team work and skills the girls displayed. The girls were all able to push the ball accurately to the wings and quickly down the centre. It was great to see such determination from everyone. During the game we were very confident in approaching and tackling the other team. We deserved to win and the winning goal by Niamh  was brilliant! Well done girls!

Rugby:

U8  v Micklefield Lost 50-45

We played our second ever game of rugby, and what a game! End to end, tags galore and skills aplenty, again our passing needs work, but our ball carrying was superb throughout, barring one minor fumble that resulted in a turnover that resulted in the crucial difference in the score line. Tries were scored by Lucian 4, Rafe 2, Nate, Sam S and Harry one apiece. Well done all, onto the Aberdour festival next week. MJ.

U9 A v Micklefield  Drew 20 – 20

A superb game of rugby with both teams displaying some excellent offloading and very strong tackling in defence.  We came back from 15-5 down at half time to gain a deserved draw with much better direct running in the second half.  Tries by Oli T 2 and Ted 2
A great performance by all the boys – very well done!

U9 B v Micklefield  Won 55 – 5

A brilliant attacking game of rugby from everyone in the team. Chinthusrt attacked from the off scoring some lovely tries through strong running and good handling. Tries came from Zach  4, Louka  3, George 2,  Aiden and Luca. In defence the boys made some spectacular hits, regularly bringing the attacking player to the ground. An enjoyable game for all to see – well done to everyone involved!

U9 C v Micklefield  Won 75 - 35

A good game that involved lots of attacking running, although the defence on both sides was a little lacking in intensity in the 1st half. The boys upped their game and only conceded 2 tries in the 2nd half, with some much better tackling being evident. Passing and using the space still remains a focus for the boys. Tries scored by Aaryan 6, Zac 4, Harry 2, Charlie 2 and Alfie. Well done boys.   SF

U10 A v Micklefield   Lost 15 - 10

We spoke in a team meeting before the game on Wednesday that the score line is irrelevant as long as we always example an improvement from the previous weeks outing. This was shown in abundance, whereby the boys worked as a team, spread the ball wider, with less route one running and dominated contact scenarios. We have been working very hard in training at keeping our shape and structure, introducing the ‘decker’ calls, taking the ball at pace and remaining fully solid as one defensive line. This last notion was evident throughout the match as we held our line, continually made and held up tackles and won back possession time and time again. We also included a new call in the pivot which led to our first try. On what was a wet and muddy day the ball did slip out of our hands on occasions (as we tried to move the ball to wider options), thus it is pivotal we take care when in possession to give us a break from defensive duties. Moreover, we must remember to provide support to our ball carriers, either as a passing option or as quick method to sandbag breakdown scenarios. In all, a really spirited performance by all the boys, which on another day would see the score line flipped; well-done indeed. Now let’s keep this momentum going as we train in preparation for next week. My thanks as always to the parental support.   WB

U10 B v Micklefield   Lost 40 - 25

A marked improvement in terms of overall performance from the boys this week. It was lovely to see some strong running, offloading in the tackle and good covering, try-saving tackling. We were always a little behind in terms of the scoreline, and the focus will now be on using the wide spaces more effectively and ensuring the ball is not ripped as often so we retain possession.  Tries by Mattie 2, Finn 2 and Robbie.
Well done to all! Keep it up boys.    SF

U11 A v Micklefield   Won 55-5

A cold drizzly day was not going to stop the Under 11 team from playing some fluent rugby.  Strong tackling prevented their big lad from gaining progress and a good defensive line put pressure on the opposition.  In attack we ran well and offloaded better in the second half and got people into space well.  Tries by Oli B, George 2, Hugo 2, Will, Josh 3, Toby and Oli H.
Excellent support play – well done!
