I AM 742: Alumna Jessica Backes
|
|
Music is in her blood. For 2014 Tech High School graduate, Jessica Backes, music is a way to connect with people. Backes just visited South Junior High School, her former middle school, to talk to students about music, but more importantly, to stop and say hello and thank you to her old band director, Anita Boster.
Backes’ musical performance journey started at South Junior High. She was a flutist in the band, but succumbing to peer pressure, dropped the class to be in other classes with friends.
It was Boster who stopped her in the hallway one day and asked, “Why aren’t you in band? You know you’re the best [flutist]. One of the best I’ve ever seen.”
“If Boster hadn’t stopped me that day, I don’t know what I’d be doing today;” remembers Backes. “She got me back in band.”
Through her remaining junior high and high school years, Boster and Tech band director, Gary Zwack, tutored her with her solo performances for school, church and even in college where she attended Gustavus Adolphus College.
At Gustavus, Backes considered teaching and studying abroad after graduation. She was getting close to completing college with a music performance degree as well as a Spanish degree.
[However] “Nothing was giving me that, ‘This is it.’ feeling,” says Backes. Continue reading

One District One Book
|
|
It’s just about time for One District One Book (ODOB)! Each year, the elementary schools in District 742 celebrate “I Love to Read” month with a very special book selection that all families can enjoy. Every evening, the students read one to two chapters of the book with their family and come to school ready to answer the daily trivia question and participate in other reading activities.
ODOB is a time that truly fosters building-wide excitement as the students, staff and families all celebrate a love of reading. We can’t wait to reveal the title of this year’s book!
ODOB kicks off with the book reveal on Feb. 8. Join us for a FREE ODOB Event on Feb. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Scheels, the proud sponsor of this year's ODOB. Family-friendly activities, a scavenger hut, stories, games and so much more! Families are welcome to bring a book to Scheels to donate. It will be another exciting adventure! Reading begins Feb. 11. What book will it be this year? Stay tuned…

I AM 742: Ahmed Abdi
|
|
“If you can’t help someone, then don’t hurt [hinder] them,” says Ahmed Abdi, lead bilingual communication support specialist (BCSS) at St. Cloud Area School District 742. It is a motto that Abdi has lived by, a philosophy instilled in him by his father.
Abdi was born in Somalia but grew up in Kenya due to civil war. Feeling passionate about education, he became a science teacher and then a supervisor for the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) a division of the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees (The UN Refugee Agency) working to stop FGM (female genital mutilation) in the rural areas of Kenya. By 2007, Abdi, continuing his work in education, followed his parents to the United States.
However, he had no idea the impact that he’d had on a young intern working in Kenya.
In 2002, Abdi met a young intern from the United States, Tori Hogan, who worked for Save the Children. Their conversation on the conditions in refugee camps and how aid was distributed to the camps inspired Hogan to write the book “Beyond Good Intentions, A Journey into the Realities of International Aid” It also became a film series. Hogan describes the experience as life-changing.
“I didn’t know I impacted her life,” says Abdi. “I went to the United States, and she came back to Kenya [to look for me] and was told that I was in the U.S.”
Hogan, determined to track Abdi down, came back to the U.S. and found him through Facebook. The two reconnected.
“She wanted to see me in person to tell me about the book and say, ‘thank you for changing my life,'” he smiles. Continue reading
