Resisting Incarceration

Pictured here: Palestinian men standing at a demonstration held outside Shahuda checkpoint, al-Khalil, holding signs.

On January 13, Palestinians demonstrated outside Shuhada checkpoint in al-Khalil/Hebron to protest the State of Israel's incarceration of Palestinians who are in need of medical attention.

Both Essra Jabes and Sami Abu Dyak, who were featured on posters displayed at the demonstration, have requested medical attention while they are in prison, which is still being denied by the State of Israel. Even though Article 76 of the Fourth Geneva Convention states that prisoners should receive food and hygiene necessary for maintaining good health, many Palestinians currently held in Israeli prisons do not receive adequate medical care. Many people gathered together at this demonstration to bear witness to the oppression being experienced by prisoners like Essra and Sami.

Waving Flag

Even though it is illegal under Israeli military law for Palestinians to publicly protest, Palestinians still publicly resist the State of Israel's military occupation. Often, Palestinians cannot protest without the Israeli military assaulting them as they resist. Despite this possible threat of military violence, Palestinians protested outside of Shuhada checkpoint on January 13.

Last Day of Term

Pictured here: Children from Saraya Kindergarten sitting on the floor playing and a photo of the certificate and other gifts given to each of the children on the last day of the school term.

Winter in al-Khalil means cold, rainy days with a number of people staying indoors. Government schools and Saraya Kindergarten in the H2 area of al-Khalil began school holidays on January 10 with school resuming on January 23.

The number of children at Saraya Kindergarten has reduced over the years from more than 100 students to the current number of 7 students, as families have moved their children to different kindergartens where their children do not have to walk through Israeli military checkpoints to access their education. In despite this oppression, the staff at the kindergarten continue to devote a lot of time and care to the children. On the last day of the school term, each of the students were provided with a photograph of themselves together with a certificate, colouring-in book and crayons, some sweets and an insulated cup.

Vegetable Street, al-Khalil

Pictured here: Palestinians purchasing fruit and vegetables from a market stall with cars and people passing along the street.

Despite the continuing occupation and military presence, residents of al-Khalil continue to go about their daily lives. According to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Hebron, the Palestinian agricultural sector provides food for approximately 4 million people in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with al-Khalil being the second largest agricultural area in the West Bank.

The street near Bab iZaweyeh, which is lined with a multitude of fruit and vegetable stalls selling fresh produce - a lot of which is grown in or around al-Khalil - shows the bustling life of al-Khalil even as the State of Israel occupies Palestine.
