Highlights from the 2019 Vestry Retreat

January 27
Dream Work As Spiritual Practice

Dream work is an ancient Spiritual Practice, the intentional commitment
to recording our nightly dreams, and processing the dream images
so that we understand the messages contained in the dream.
The wonder and curiosity which is integral to dream work carries over to other
areas of life, bringing along a greater comfort with mystery, uncertainty,
and paradox. Dream work offers a method for healing old wounds,
living more fully and joyfully each day, increasing
self-awareness, improving understanding of our life purpose,
and integrating new understandings. Each of these leads, in turn,
to greater empathy and compassion.
Tim Hussey will lead an Adult Forum to introduce the practice of
Dream Work and to invite Grace members to participate
in the 8 weeks of Dream Group to follow.  Please consider
joining us as we form our very own Dream Group
at Grace Church.

Rediscovering this work connects us to a long tradition of honoring the
Dream as a way in which God speaks to us, guides us, informs us,
heals us, and helps us to be conscious of God’s constant presence in our lives.

The Dream Group is a safe container where we share our
Dreams and invite others in the group to help us work out their meanings.

Parishioner Tim Hussey will offer an 8-week Dream Group, beginning
Tuesday, February 5 at 9:00 am in the Library.

Understanding Opioid Addiction
Saturday, January 26th, 11:00 am

Grace Church will be hosting this Social Issues Forum  with experts from
Haywood County on hand to help all of us understand addiction, in general,
and opioids, more specifically.  Our hope is that all
who attend will grow in knowledge and compassion.
A light brunch will follow the 90-minute presentation featuring experts, community,
and friends closely affected by this plight.
Please RSVP by calling (828-456-6029) or
emailing the office
(
admin@gracewaynesville.com).

Here is a little background about Social Issues Forums at Grace:
Rationale:  Jesus was passionately engaged in the "social issues" of his time:
hunger, health and healing, and the economically and socially marginalized.
The Church, as the Body of Christ on earth, is also called to engagement in social issues,
especially those affecting our neighbors.
Purpose:  The purpose of these forums is to provide education about
pressing social issues and avenues for Christian service
in partnership with others.  These forums will inform our
outreach ministries and enrich our spiritual lives.

Your Help is Needed
Please sign up for Coffee Hour!

Coffee hour is fun and very easily done if several friends
get together to provide the snack.
Cheese and crackers, a box of doughnuts, fruit, and coffee is enough.
Some folks like to bring casseroles or sausage and biscuits,
but it doesn't need to be that elaborate.
It is coffee hour . . . a time to get together,
mingle, meet new people, and enjoy everyone's company!

The Sign-Up Sheet is on the bulletin board in Thatcher Hall.

HELPING OUR FRIEND AND
FELLOW CONGREGANT, BARBARA JO
                          "Thirst" by Mary Oliver

Another morning and I wake with thirst
for the goodness I do not have. I walk
out to the pond and all the way God has
given us such beautiful lessons. Oh Lord,
I was never a quick scholar but sulked
and hunched over my books past the hour
and the bell; grant me, in your mercy,
a little more time. Love for the earth
and love for you are having such a long
conversation in my heart. Who knows what
will finally happen or where I will be sent,
yet already I have given a great many things
away, expecting to be told to pack nothing,
except the prayers which, with this thirst,
I am slowly learning.
