Napa Valley Reds from first 100pt. American Winery

Groth Vineyards & Winery is owned by Dennis and Judy Groth who are natives of the South Bay Area and moved to Napa Valley in the early 80s. Dennis worked at Hewlett Packard while attending college and eventually moved on to become Chief Financial Officer of Atari, the games and electronics pioneer.   In 1981, the Groths purchased a 121 acre parcel in Oakville. Soon after they added a second vineyard of 44 acres located south of Yountville and Groth Winery was established in 1982. Groth continues to be 100% family owned, operated, and managed by the Groth family including children Elizabeth, Suzanne and D. Andrew.

Mirroring Dennis’ timing in getting in on the ground floor in the tech industry, the Groths picked up ideal vineyard real estate when such prime parcels could still be obtained with relative ease.  Nearby neighbors include Silver Oak, Screaming Eagle, Plumpjack and Saddleback Cellars. The Groths emerged with a bang when their 1985 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve became the first American winery awarded 100pts by Robert Parker.

Groth operates sustainably.  They reoriented the vine rows to follow the natural direction of the Napa Valley so that breezes coming from the ocean flow more easily through the vineyards.  The increased air circulation reduces mildew and vine rot and thus also the need for fungicides.  The winery maintains an “insectary”  along side the vineyards with over forty different species of plants chosen for their ability to attract beneficial insects which act as natural predators to harmful insects, therefore reducing the need for pesticides.

The wines from Groth are known for their structure and ageability.  They only produce the Reserve in exceptional years.  We are offering here the 2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the non-reserve 2015 Cabernet.  The Reserve ’14 opens with aromas of sweet plum and black cherry, with oak spice notes of nutmeg, anise and vanilla. A smooth entry on the palate builds quickly to lush, ripe, dark cherry and black currents, sweet oak underneath and an excellent tannic structure.  The ’15 Cab, very approachable now, is medium bodied with good balance, smooth texture and round mouthfeel.

Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Napa Valley 2014
Retail Price: $134.99
Sale Price:  $99.97

Muted at first, this reserve wine shows a deft hand. A red currant tone is met by a mild grip of tannins and a soft midpalate that is lightly rich in coconut shavings and mocha. Supple and balanced in richness, it offers classic flavors of cassis and cherry wrapped in supportive oak.” - 94pts, Wine Enthusiast.  93pts, Wine Spectator

Groth Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Napa Valley 2015
Retail Price:  $64.99
Sale Price:  $54.97

This shows real interest on the nose with fresh blackcurrants, ivy, tea leaf, vanilla, cloves and peppermint. Freshness comes through aplenty on the palate, which is full-bodied with structured if chewy tannins, some pretty acidity and a driven finish.” - 92pts, James Suckliing.
