eManagement Tips - January 2019

A free monthly update for Associates and Members of RiverRhee's Managers' Community
Welcome to RiverRhee's managers' version of the January 2019 issue of eManagement Tips, our monthly resource for new and experienced managers who have attended or are considering one of our leadership and management courses.

We hope you have all benefited from some rest and recuperation during the festive break and wish you all the best for 2019.

Whether or not you have made resolutions for the new year, we thought you might enjoy sharing some of the leadership insights we have been gleaning from our reading.  These include:
  • What we can learn from Lincoln about the skills and strengths for transformative leadership
  • How to cultivate everyday courage to influence change in the workplace
  • What leaders and managers can do to help ensure the success of process improvement programmes
  • Reflections on adopting a positive outlook from booklet number 5 in the Building Blocks of Emotional Intelligence
Our 2019  calendar of courses kicks off in January with: the one-day Supervisors' course, Performance Reviews and Appraisals, Introduction to Management.  We also have Transition to Leadership on the 5th February.  See the full list at the foot of this newsletter.

We are continuing to schedule courses on a demand basis.  So if the course you want is not shown, do please get in touch so that we can arrange it.

Transformative leadership AND cultivating everyday courage

Liz Mercer co-delivers the Transition to Leadership course with Elisabeth Goodman, and has written two recent blogs which reflect some of the concepts that we try to get across in the course*.

Both blogs are based on recent articles in the Harvard Business Review.

The article on Transformative Leadership references Lincoln's resilience and emotional intelligence.  Liz quotes the author saying that Lincoln: “displayed an extraordinary ability to absorb the conflicting wills of a divided people and reflect back to them an unbending faith in a unified future”.  She then lists out the behaviours and traits that Lincoln portrayed.

The article on Cultivating Everyday Courage is a great check-list to guide leaders, and indeed anyone who would like to have an impact in the workplace.  The check-list includes laying the groundwork to establish your credibility; choosing your battles and the right moment to fight them; framing your communication in a way that people are more likely to be receptive to; and quality follow-up.

*Transition to Leadership will be running next on the 5th February.

The role of leaders and managers in process improvement programmes

We encourage the managers and team members that we work with to identify insights and actions that they would like to apply to improve their work.

How successful they are in doing so relies on the support they receive from their management and leadership teams once back in the workplace.

This applies to all the topics that we cover, but is perhaps most telling for Lean and Six Sigma* (or process improvement), where there is a potential to make savings in time or money of 20% or more.

A recent article in Harvard Business Review emphasises the role that leaders and managers must play to realise these sorts of benefits.  This includes: visible support; articulating the link with the organisation's goals; choosing appropriate 'pain points' to focus on; being active coaches and facilitators.

*Introduction to Lean and Six Sigma will be running next on the 27th March.

Will you be adopting a positive outlook in 2019?

"Positive outlook" is the theme of booklet number 5 in Building Blocks of Emotional Intelligence.

According to Daniel Goleman et al, "Positive Outlook" is about:
  • Seeing the positive in people, situations and events
  • Seeing the opportunity in situations
  • Persistence in pursuing goals
  • Expecting the best from others
In New Year Resolutions! Adopting a positive attitude you can read more about Goleman et al's definition of "positive outlook", why it's important in work and everyday life, and how you might go about increasing your positive outlook (if you wish) in 2019!
