Grahame Hicks (Pocklington)

Well, I'm afraid that I don't think sacking the manager will help. But then I don't know what will.

The whole thing reminds me of a fly or wasp that's just been sprayed with insecticide. It keeps kicking for a bit, occasionally almost looks like it might recover but in the end, it succumbs to the inevitable.

For me, sadly, the whole City debacle over such a long time has eroded my wider interest in football as a whole.

I couldn't really care about the FA Cup, the League Cup is, I assume, still contested but who would know and while the artisanship of the players in the Premier League is enjoyable to watch, it is not English football as I would define it.

Shame, but I have found there really is more to life than football.
Chris Crowcroft (Ludlow)

Has any club in any English league hired and fired so many managers and players?

Might it be connected that we are towards the bottom end of the sixth tier?

Perhaps our director of football should be asked to prove his mettle rather than yet another managerial appointment and player merry-go-round.

From what I I have seen and heard reported, I refuse to believe there are not 11 players in the current squad cannot perform to standard if consistency of selection and tactics are employed.

Subject to fitness and position, one could do worse than pick the best XI  in the player rankings – and stick with it.
Robin Bowes (Tollerton)

In reply to John English (TOOAB, Issue 007):

Once more for the really slow or terminally stupid ones at the back: Jason McGill is *not* the "the hand that that feeds us", he is the hand that lends us money secured against our only asset (Bootham Crescent) and proceeds to waste it all by making poor business decisions, all while ignoring legally-binding agreements with the other major shareholder in the club.

This club is going nowhere until McGill leaves and our club regains the trust of the community and puts these poisonous years behind it.

McGill out.
Andrew Leathley (York)

I see John English is back on form again (TOOAB Issue 007).

His comments can rarely be taken seriously when he absolves the chairman of any blame for our current predicament and then praises him to the hilt, presumably for:- the way he runs our club at huge losses by mortgaging us to the hilt; allowing Penney to appoint his mate Collins (the cheap option); handing out ridiculous long contracts to players we then have to dispose of before time and pay-off; snubbing not only the Supporters' Trust but the general fan-base when serious questions are asked - especially when trying to snaffle the Trust's shares; the hilarious (not) answers to fans by the current directors through the recent York Press Q&A article; the retention of the hugely unpopular and clueless McNamara in a CEO role, for which he was unqualified - what did he bring to this club, did anyone find out?; his treatment of staff who have a genuine love for the club, who then are either suddenly disposed of, or feel the need to walk because it is such a 'horrible' place to work; his current absence from matches to see first-hand just what is going on down at BC; the retention of the services of safety-officer Chris Tock and his cronies whose personal vendettas against certain elements of our support and general unforgiving attitude continue to irritate York fans, and have done for years, when little wrong has been done...

...there are probably several more negative points that could be made that I’ve missed, that make any support for him to continue at the helm, frankly quite breath-taking.

Then to top it all, John suggests Denis (one 'n') Smith managed us at Championship (the old Div 2) level!

Come off it, John.

The fans are sick of the current poisonous regime, the way it is run, and how the fans are treated, and it all starts from the top.

No wonder supporters are refusing to attend in their droves - even ST holders have had enough - and that's before we consider the god-awful football on offer.

The players don't care - Law, Newton and Parkin are prime examples who should be ashamed of the way they conduct themselves on and off the pitch - and it all filters down from the shambles currently present in our boardroom.

Tuppence ha'Penney is worth literally that to this club - he can walk too.

Really, the bloody lot need to go. Many fans are feeling this way.

Yes, ... many. There is not one ounce of pride within that football club of ours at the moment. It's time for McGill to do the honourable thing now before things get really, really, really sour, and step down.

He's done his time. The early years under his tenure (with Sophie and Rob alongside him) were admirable, but since their departure, he's been devoid of all common sense and was making decisions off his own back without anyone alongside in the boardroom to advise/question.

He'll get most, or all of his money back (maybe more! - will we/the Trust be told?) when the ground is sold off. It's time to let someone else come in to restore some love around the club.

What a wretched way of signing out from our beloved Bootham Crescent.

The old girl must be silently shedding a tear - fearful of the send-off she will receive later this summer. It could well turn out to be nothing but a damp squib, which would sum up this horrid season quite aptly. How sad.

P.S. Good luck to Sam Collins, he deserves better. Seems a decent bloke, but maybe not tough enough to be a manager. Served up as the sacrificial lamb, it was always going to be a difficult task. But he was out of his depth and it appears some players did not respect him for what he was trying to do.
George Davidson (Slough)

Please, could Dave King (TOOAB, Issue 007) give a sense of how JM is taking dividends out of the club?

I understood that spending exceeded revenue at the club and the club ran a loss made up by JM packaging? Is that not the case?

York City reassured by number of "credible candidates" applying for manager's role

By Peter Martini

YORK City have already received a number of "very credible applications" for their vacant managerial role - with managing director Steve Kilmartin saying several names in the running would be "well-received by the fan base".

Sam Collins became the second boss to be sacked by the Minstermen this season following the defeat at minnows Curzon Ashton on Saturday which left the team 15th in National League North.

Sporting director Dave Penney - who won back-to-back promotions when in charge of Doncaster in 2003 and 2004 and also managed Bristol Rovers, Darlington and Oldham - will take training this week but he has ruled himself out of the job long-term, just like he did before Collins was appointed following the departure of Martin Gray in mid-August.

Kilmartin says a shortlist is being drawn up with interviews to take place before the week is out.

City have no game on Saturday and are next in action away to fellow former Football League stalwarts Stockport County on January 19.

"There are already a number of applications and there are some very credible applications," Kilmartin told The Press.

"We have had a considerable flurry of people interested in this position because of it being York City, which in many ways is extremely reassuring.

"We are preparing a list with the intention of interviewing some of these people later in the week.

"Things are moving forward quickly.

"There are names in there that would be well-received by the fan base, by people who do follow football."

He added: "We have Stockport a week on Saturday and we would like to make an appointment before then if possible.

"There are people getting in touch all the time. There are one or two names in there that I recognised straight away and I will be interested in what they have to say and what their hopes and ambitions are for the football club."

Kilmartin would not say if any applications had come from managers with Football League experience or who are currently in employment.

"We've had applications from a number of different individuals at different stages of their careers in different levels in the football hierarchy," he said.

"We may have our own ideas of the person we think is the right person to take us out of the sixth division.

"It's just a great shame from my perspective that Sam Collins did not manage to do that, as he was a thoroughly decent man and I liked working with him."

Kilmartin stressed the club had nobody lined up to take the job before axing Collins on Saturday night.

"There has been no interviews, no contact, nothing, beforehand," he said. "We (the board) talked between ourselves but nothing more than that.

"There is nobody that has been interviewed at this time.

"The decision was taken on Saturday evening. I won't say it had not been discussed before, because that would be untrue. The football was not working out as we intended or hoped. We were prepared to make the decision that was necessary on Saturday evening. In truth the decision made itself."

Kilmartin also confirmed the club had not officially advertised the job and would not be doing so.

He explained: "There has been sufficient interest of people with sufficient credibility for us to not have to go down that route.

"This will also help us to move with the speed we think is appropriate and to get the right quality of candidate."

About TOOAB

There’s Only One Arthur Bottom was first published as an almost-daily email newsletter in July 1997 and has been distributed continuously since. Subscriber numbers peaked at more than 1,100 when the club’s future was threatened by potential closure in 2001 but more than 800 subscribers, living in more than 30 countries, will receive this edition. Editor Josh Easby started the newsletter from New Zealand (where he lives today) but has variously produced and distributed it from the United Kingdom, Australia and (briefly) Italy.

Over the years, TOOAB subscribers have variously supported the club in many different ways, using the newsletter at times to share ideas that have helped the club and to raise money which has been used to buy much-needed equipment (for the physio room), sponsor members of the youth team and to sponsor senior players’ kit. Subscribers (who often call themselves ‘Arthurites’) often meet up for pre-match/post-match drinks and have arranged functions together.
