MLK Service Project-Items Needed by TOMORROW

One of the ways we are celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this year is by doing an all school service learning project by focusing on one of his famous quotes, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’’’

In this spirit, we would like to make blankets to donate to the Crisis Nursery.  Students will be making the blankets during our Reed Family time in Thursday, January 17th

If you would like to help, we are asking for fabric donations.  Please sign up here to bring in fabric.  Cuts of fabric must be 1 1/2 yards of fleece.  There is a 3 yard minimum for most fabrics, which will make two blankets. If you choose to donate by purchasing fabric online through Joann’s Fabric (3 yard minimum online), or purchase 3 yards in store, then please select two slots in the Sign Up Genius.

For convenience, here’s a link to Joann’s Fabric:  http://www.joann.com/fabric/fleece-fabric/#sz=90. You can even order the fabric online and pick it up at Joann's!

This year, we are asking volunteers who purchase the material to pre-cut each 1 1/2 yards of fabric. Please click on the link below for cutting directions and visual:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn7yqJP6xvM

Additionally, you can help by donating a package of individual cereal boxes or a package of individual 100% juice boxes.

Please send in all donations with your child by TOMORROW-Friday, January 11th.  Thank you for your generosity.

REED Talks

Save the Date! REED Talks Speaker Series
Tuesday, January 15 @ 7 pm in the Reed Library

“Talk about it” a presentation from NCADA speaker Leah Schaeffer.  NCADA = National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse.  When parents talk with their kids about alcohol and other drugs, children are 50% less likely to misuse substances. Many parents may not feel prepared to have these conversations—they may be unsure about when to have them or what to say. We hope that these talks will give parents the tools and resources they need to start vital conversations and protect their families.   Click here to learn more.

REGISTER HERE: http://evite.me/3mT1pPbdUF.  Childcare will be provided!  Questions?  Contact Peggy Ward.

Special Friends Breakfast

Please join us for this year's Special Friends Breakfast in the Reed gym. Each Kindergartner, Second and Fourth Grader may invite a parent, grandparent or special friend to join them at school for breakfast!

This year's Special Friends Breakfasts will take place from 8-8:30am on the following days:

Wednesday,  January 30-Kindergarten
Thursday, January 31-2nd and 4th Grade

We need 2-4 volunteers per day to help set up tables and serve food to make this event a success.  This is an easy, quick volunteer option!  To volunteer, contact Toni MurphyLisa Warticovschi or Rachel Sokolich.

Reed Parent Trivia Night

Math Fact Scholars Updates

  • Math Fact Scholars starts back up on 1/16. There will be no MFS on 1/30 because of an event in the gym.
  • Students must be registered to continue attending. Once a student finishes a level, they cannot continue to attend unless registered for the next level.  Students who attend must participate in test-taking.
  • Workbook Reminder:  Students must finish each level's workbook and turn it in to the MFS Parent Volunteers to complete the level and receive their medal or trophy.  Students cannot start the next level without completing and turning in the workbook.
  • New Registrants: Students not currently enrolled can sign up anytime!  Just to go My School Bucks to register.  Once registered, the workbook will be delivered to your student so they can start practicing. Weekly attendance is strongly recommended but is not required.
    • Kindergartners may enroll, but parents must be in attendance during testing sessions.  K students who attend without parents will not be allowed to take tests.
  • Volunteers:  Thank you to all of those parents who have helped out so far this school year! We rely heavily on parent volunteers each week in order for the program to be successful, so we could not have this opportunity available for your children without your help! If you are able to come one time or once a week, we are grateful for any assistance!

Thank you for your support of this wonderful program!  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Trish Saleeby or Meredith Marine.

Back by popular demand! 3rd Annual Reed Pet Photoshoot

On Saturday, April 13th, former Reed parent Brook Palanca will work with a pet trainer on set, at her air conditioned studio in Ladue, to get your dog to do their best tricks & licks for the camera. There will be a groomer on site in case your pet needs a little fluffing before their big shoot.

Full session fee of $50 to be donated to RSA.  Images will be artistically and creatively edited- worthy of hanging on your wall! Images are high resolution digital files that will be delivered to you in an online gallery and are available for purchase.  Ask Brook about adding your kids to the shoot for an additional fee. This is an event you don't want to miss!

Open to all current Reed families.

Sign up on MySchoolBucks! 18 spots available!  Brook will contact you once you've signed up to schedule your time!

REED SCHOOL INFORMATION

Get Involved with RSA!

There are still lots of ways to be involved with the RSA this year!  Keep an eye out in the weekly eMinder for sign ups for different events (the Book Fair is up next).  You can also review the description of events here, review the calendar on the right hand column of this newsletter, and the contact people for each event on the RSA roster.

Banana Splits Group

“Banana Splits” is a group designed for children in kindergarten through fourth grade whose families are going through, or have gone through, a change or transition.  The primary purpose of the group is to provide a safe, like minded place where children can discuss feelings and concerns.

Your child does not need to be having problems to benefit from the group.  As children move through each developmental stage, different issues concerning separation, divorce and remarriage may arise. It is often helpful to open lines of communication for your child. Once Mrs Gartenberg, the Reed School Counselor,  knows who will be participating, she will work out a schedule that works best for each grade level. She will notify you when our groups begin.

If you are interested in having your child participate, or would like additional information, please contact Mrs Gartenberg at 314-983-5569 or sgartenberg@ladueschools.net

It's Not Too Late to Make Your RSA Contribution

RSA appreciates everyone who has made their contribution so far!  Without your support, RSA could not fund all the many things that it does, including enrichment opportunities, classroom supplies, field trips, author visits, competitions as well as community building events such as Passport Night, Summer Sendoff and our upcoming Reed Fall Festival!

CLICK HERE TO DONATE through MySchoolBucks If you have any questions regarding RSA dues or run into any difficulty with your online payment, please contact RSA Treasurer Jennifer Wambach. You can also pay via check in the envelope you received in the packet last week.

As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, all donations to RSA are tax deductible in the United States to the full extent provided by US Federal law. Your donation may qualify for employer matching.

Thank you for your support!

News From Our Favorite Coaches

Coach Plogger and Coach Driscoll would like to remind everyone that all students are required to have tennis shoes for PE class.  It is important for your child's safety and comfort that they either wear tennis shoes to school or change into their tennis shoes before PE class.  A complete list of approved and unapproved shoes are available on the PE website if you have any questions.

Keep up on the latest events, activities, and PE information by following the coaches on Twitter @ReedPhysicalEd.

TymeMachine is excited to host the first Community Coding Competition for students between the ages of 8 and 18, sponsored by the Ladue Education Foundation & Alumni Association.

Codefest 2019 will take place March 30, 2019 from 9 a.m. to noon at a location TBD.

TymeMachine is a non-profit organization that brings the latest technology to our children and involves them with hands-on interdisciplinary STEM learning opportunities to grow their interest in careers that will be in high demand in the future. Students will create projects based on the St. Louis Community under three different categories: Games, Digital Story and Art & Animation. There are two entry levels – Junior (8 to 12 years) and Senior (13 to 18 years). Students will use either Scratch or Python to create the project at home and participate in an on-the-spot coding challenge.
