Africa Oyé's Chair recognised in New Year's Honours

--

Africa Oyé's Chair of the Board of Trustees, Gad Kuju has been recognised with a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to diversity, multiculturalism and our very own festival in the New Years Honours.

Oyé's Artistic Director, Paul Duhaney was delighted to learn of Kuju's award.

"I've known Gad for twenty years and have had the pleasure of working with him as Oyé grew into something we could never have foreseen" Paul said. "It's brilliant to see him recognised with such a prestigious award.

Gad Kuju's award comes just as preparations begin in earnest for Africa Oyé's 27th annual festival of African and Caribbean music and culture.

Dates for this year's festival are set to be announced later in January with line-up announcements following in the coming months.

5 More Minutes - a funny and magical show about bedtime

5 More Minutes is a funny and magical show about bedtime for children and their grown-ups, which will explore the fun, frustration and fantasy that can be had in that magical time between awake and asleep. Real world play will blur with the magic of dreams as we all try to settle down and finally get ready to say goodnight and go to sleep… unless that is, we can have 5 More Minutes!?

The show is an interactive family show with a playful performance style, live music and puppetry/object manipulation, and is aimed at children ages 3-6 and their families.

Mandela family to visit Liverpool

The family of revolutionary leader Nelson Mandela have announced they will be heading to Liverpool next year when work is set to start on a tribute to the Freeman of the City. 
 
The former President’s eldest daughter Dr Makaziwe ‘Maki’ Mandela and his granddaughter Tukwini Mandela, will visit Princes Park on Monday 11 February 2019 – giving their seal of approval and allowing work to officially start on the permanent memorial to the revered freedom fighter.
 
The installation will reflect Mandela’s life, his love of gardens and horticulture, his teaching and passion for equality and humanity.

Threshold announce first wave of artists for 2019 festival

Ahead of this year's Threshold Festival of Music & Arts, organisers have revealed 12 artists from their burgeoning programme set to take over Liverpool's Baltic Triangle on March 29-30.

The line-up reveal is the first wave of information released by the event production team behind the festival, who last month celebrated Arts Council funding success.

Expanding again after the more compact 'Across the Threshold' event in 2018, this year's event will take place across Baltic venues including: District, 24 Kitchen Street, Brick Street, Hobo Kiosk, RPM Studios and more to be announced.

The Cult of Water

The Cult of Water combines original music and film, art and archive footage with a captivating monologue. As a one-man show it is a feast for the ears, eyes, heart and soul, taking audiences on a dream-like journey in search of the ‘spirit of dark and lonely waters’.

The performance concludes with a Q&A, focusing on the stories and history of the river in the town/city in which the show is being performed. Local poet Eleanor Rees will assist writer and performer David Bramwell in illuminating the folklore surrounding the River Mersey for this Liverpool show.

DOOLEY AT 90! Dooleyday to feature unseen pictures, films, talks and special exhibition

Arthur Dooley, one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century and one of Liverpool’s favourite sons, is to be honoured on January 17th, on what would have been his 90th birthday.

A special exhibition of unseen photographs and original sculptures form the centerpiece of the latest annual ‘Dooleyday’.

This year’s celebration will again centre on The Florrie in the Dingle, reputedly a favourite building of Arthur’s, and feature films, presentations, talks, a book reading, and an exhibition of original Dooley work.
