Enterprise Competition 2019 – discuss your idea at our advisory session

Find out how you can benefit from expert business mentoring support by entering this year’s competition, which seeks to identify the best business ideas of Churchill alumni, regardless of matriculation date, as well as current students and JRFs. There will be an open advisory session in College on Tuesday 29 January at 7.30pm, for prospective entrants to ask questions and gain some one-to-one advice on their potential submission.

Ankylosaur footprint with skin and claw impressions

‘Treasure trove’ of dinosaur footprints found in southern England

A study co-authored by Churchill Fellow Neil Davies has uncovered more than 85 well-preserved dinosaur footprints in East Sussex. Strong storms and storm surges over the past four winters have led to periods of collapse of the sandstone and mudstone cliffs revealing these rare finds.

Dr Edmund Birch

Major prize for Churchill Fellow

Congratulations to Dr Edmund Birch who was awarded the Larry Schehr Memorial Award for the best early career presentation at the annual North American conference in Nineteenth-Century French Studies, for his paper, 'Reading the News: Maupassant and Freud'. His research encompasses the novel, the history of journalism, nineteenth-century politics and popular culture; drawing on a range of authors, including Balzac, the brothers Goncourt and Maupassant. He is currently writing a book about Alexandre Dumas père.

Alumna co-chairs the World Economic Forum's biotechnology council

Congratulations to Dr Elizabeth O'Day (G06) who has been made co-chair of the World Economic Forum's biotechnology council. Dr O'Day is the CEO and Founder of Olaris Therapeutics, a pharmaceutical company that develops precision medicines for diseases with little to no treatment options. She is also the Founder of Lizzard Fashion, an apparel company that uses fashion to promote science.

A new code has been released to enable alumni to book accommodation online via the College website at discounted rates. (We will no longer be issuing payment links on an individual basis.) Simply click on the pink button, enter your dates and the promotional code KXJANTHREE. Be sure to enter your matriculation year in the ‘Additional information’ section as the special rates are only for Churchill alumni.

The College elected three new Honorary Fellows in 2018: Baroness Brown of Cambridge (Prof Dame Julia King FRS, FREng) (former Fellow, 1987), former Vice-Chancellor of Aston University, 2006–16; Professor Oliver Hart FBA (former Fellow, 1975), Andrew E. Furer Professor of Economics at Harvard since 1997, and winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2016; Professor Nicola Spaldin FRS (U88), head of the Materials Theory Research Group at ETH Zurich since 2010, and laureate of the L’Oreal–UNESCO Awards for Women in Science, 2017.

From the Suffragettes to the ‘Snowflakes' – Helen Pankhurst

Join Helen Pankhurst, great-granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst and granddaughter of Sylvia Pankhurst, for a participatory discussion on changes to women’s lives since the vote was first granted to some women in 1918. The session is informed by Helen's book Deeds Not Words: The Story of Women’s Rights, Then and Now.

Uphill All the Way: A Century of Women in Parliament

Until 18 January

Legislation giving women the right to stand for election to the House of Commons was passed on 21 November 1918, nine months after 8.5 million women over 30, and all men, had been given the right to vote. This exhibition features highlights from the Archives Centre’s three collections from pioneering female parliamentarians, Mary Agnes Hamilton, Florence Horsbrugh and Margaret Thatcher, uncovering a range of women’s experiences at Westminster.

Lise Meitner

Lise Meitner symposium

28 January

The Churchill Archives Centre is proud to hold the scientific papers and personal correspondence of Lise Meitner (1878-1968), who, according to the inscription on her gravestone, was a physicist who never lost her humanity. This one-day symposium will feature three panels that will explore Meitner’s life and work as well as her scientific achievements and her political legacy.

Charity Dinner and Auction at the Møller Centre

In support of their chosen Charity of the Year, the Møller Centre invite all alumni to a four-course dinner and auction, with a sustainable menu created by its Executive Chef, accompanied by a flight of wines. Not only is 8 March 2019 International Women's Day, it is also the 50th anniversary of the day that Churchill was the first Cambridge College to vote to go co-educational. To mark the occasion, the Master will host a conversation event with one of our first female Fellows, Professor Alison Finch. Alumni are invited to join them both at High Table afterwards.

Talk by Lord Justice Sales at Freshfields, London

Join us for what promises to be a fascinating talk by Lord Justice Sales (alumnus Philip Sales, U80), recently appointed to the Supreme Court. The free event, kindly supported by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, will be hosted by the Master, Professor Dame Athene Donald, and includes a drinks reception.
