CFP, of course: ESPN's Dinich reports the ACC's deal with Charlotte to host the league's FB title game has an out clause should the marketplace change & eliminate conference championship matchups. ACC Commish Swofford on potential expansion, "I think it's reasonable to evaluate it, but most of the noise is from outside the room, not within the room. I don't think we should have our heads stuck in the sand ... you want to re-evaluate it and see if it's accomplishing what you want it to accomplish, and certainly to this point I think it would appear the answer has been yes." MAC Commish Steinbrecher & SEC boss Sankey both say conference championship game are too important to the fabric of their leagues. Swofford does not "expect dramatic news to come out of tomorrow’s meetings." As for Sankey, he expects, "An acknowledgment that the 4-team playoff has worked exceptionally well." (link, link, link); Another key note, this one from CBS Sports headliner Dodd, "Breaking: Jim Delany pushed a year ago for a review of the CFP selection process, specifically weight given to conf champs. We now have a clearer view of what will happen tomorrow here in SJ at commishes' meetings." (link)
"Nothing would make us happier," was Notre Dame AD Swarbrick's response to a question on if the Fighting Irish would add a 13th FB game annually if the NCAA were agreeable. More: "Are you writing it (the legislation) so that it says if you are an independent ineligible for a conference championship you can play a 13th game? Is it discretionary that anyone not in a conference championship can play a 13th game? So it's hard to get the legislative support for that. […] I do feel passionately that when you schedule a noncompetitive opponent you haven't necessarily played 13 games, and you shouldn't be treated as having played 13 games." (link)
Last Thursday, federal prosecutors asked for more time to file documents in the upcoming MBB-FBI trial set for April. The reason? "The government seeks this request as it is actively engaged in plea negotiations with several of the defendants in the case." Attorney for former Arizona MBB AC Richardson: "I would not be doing my job if I am not exploring plea options. That being said, Book has not decided whether to plea or not and we are prepping for trial." (link)
With tonight's National Championship ready for kick, Clemson Assoc. AD for Creative Solutions Gantt & Director of Creative Solutions, Design & Digital Kallin rapped with AthleticDirectorU on the Instagram-like "stories" the Tigers have integrated with the help of WMT to communicate with a key target audience - prospective student-athletes & teenagers 13 to 18 - who already grasp the functionality. Within the piece: "The real locus of our digital power is our audience. […]  It’s no secret that, given our increasingly digitized existence, our audience’s collective attention span, if not shrinking, is certainly evolving. […] The considerable amount of clutter in the digital space has meant that we must quickly deliver attention-grabbing, high quality content. […] A well-articulated vision can help steer individuals to act appropriately and make choices that advance an organization’s goals and strategy." More. (link)
Continuing on the digital/social front, former Auburn staffer & current New York Yankees Senior Manager for Digital & Social Strategy Smith profiles four college FB programs she thinks are killing the game. Clemson is one of the four with the lead in of, "Content That Feels More Personal." The others: Ohio State ("Design That Brings The Fire"), South Carolina ("Next Level Production & Swagger") & Georgia ("Weekly Trailer Fueled By Emotion"). Lots of good content examples for each brand within the rundown. (link)
How many drivers did it take to get Clemson's 53-foot FB equipment truck from South Carolina to California for tonight's CFP championship game? Three, each rotating behind the wheel for the 43-hour long trip. The journey logged $1,000 in fuel, through eight states, ice and snow storms and six pit stops. Oh, and the trio are volunteers, but they do get a daily food per diem, lodging and game tickets, which they estimate to be worth about $5,000. (link)

1.Question's @TaiMBrown caught up with Rice AD Karlgaard on engaging influential stakeholders & the importance of not making decisions in a vacuum. Karlgaard: "Engaging stakeholders is very situational depending on the nature of the strategic decision you are making. […] Some stakeholders just want an FYI, while some want to be deeply involved in the decision making process. You have to figure out, based on each situation, the appropriate level of engagement for each person. […] I think verbal communication or in-person communication is the best way to engage people." More goodies in the 14-minute convo. (link)
Alabama Asst. AD for Football Communications Maxson profiled by The Athletic's Suttles. From pre-season media training to organizing interviews throughout the year, Maxson's job is a busy one. Saban on his "message shaper": "Josh does an outstanding job of organizing that for our entire organization, not just for me but for all the players. We also do a significant amount of training for our players so that they can create value for themselves when they do have the opportunity to sort of brand themselves in front of the media, in front of the public. I think his role is critical, and I think he’s done an outstanding job." (link)
Catching up on D1Baseball's Rogers & his coverage from the ABCA Convention in Dallas, looks like last year's CWS TV viewership was up to the highest marks since 2012 & the Super Regional round "averaged 448K viewers, up 40 percent YOY from 2017." Some competitive overview data: Runs scored per game reduced a touch from 2017 (5.71) to 5.64 last season. ERA's also slimmed from 4.94 to 4.88. Home Runs pre game from 0.75 to 0.71. Guessing we'll get a full ABCA rundown from Rogers sometime soon. (link)
FootballScoop's Barnett with some interesting notes from the AFCA Convention in San Antonio. Texas HC Herman "says it’s 'mind-boggling' year coaches can’t go out in the spring. We may have a young man take an official visit in May and that’s the first time I’ve ever met him." Herman points to the positions of tight end & offensive line as the two hardest to get college-ready talent from the high school ranks. UCLA DC Pellum: "If I could change one thing about recruiting, I would make the high school coach the point person and get all these other voices out." (link)
Richmond AD Hardt Q&As after his first year of leading the Spiders, "Overall, I believe the University of Richmond’s athletics program is in great shape and a strong infrastructure - both from a facility and a staff perspective - is in place to support successful championship-level programs." Calls FB "a work in progress" as HC Huesman "has been busy directing a complete review of our program and assessing every aspect." Two key priorities for 2019 are completing fundraising for a new hoops practice facility, which includes the repurposing of Millhiser Gym to a "state-of-the-art student-athlete support center," as well as "the successful re-launch of our expanded athletics leadership program for our student-athletes." "Very comfortable" with all of UR's league affiliations. (link)
Louisville MBB attendance is tracking to be at its lowest level since the 1980-81 season & Cards AD Tyra is "looking to see what every school is doing and trying to figure out if it would work (here) or not." Tyra on the impact of the last couple of years for the brand, "I’m sure there’s a percentage of fans who we may have lost. It’s obviously going to be a challenge to find our way back from that. ... We’ve got to be better. I don’t think there’s ever a time when you can take people for granted. You’ve got to be a program that fans can engage with." Dynamic ticket pricing mentioned in the piece, though it sure sounds like a variable model, a new loyalty plan could earn season ticket holders 10% off next year's packages by having their tickets scanned at every home game. (link)
Panini finally gets Notre Dame to ink on the dotted line for a multi-year deal. Fermata Partners played middle man. Panini America CEO Warsop: "...the ability to finally be able to welcome Notre Dame into the Panini America fold is something we’re extremely proud of; there is such a rich history with Notre Dame and we look forward to producing unique trading cards for the Fighting Irish faithful, some of the most passionate fans in the world." (link)
As of 6:26p last night there were 5,123 unsold tickets on the secondary market for tonight's CFP natty matchup. TicketIQ reports that number to be 217% more than the 2017 Alabama-Clemson matchup & 55% more than the 2016 version of the title game. (link)
Also Noticed: Condolences to the Chicago State family as Sports Information Director Miggins passed away. (link); New to the AthleticDirectorU Podcast is Georgetown's Reed & Ozery discussing the Hoyas' commitment to student-athlete development. (link); Interesting personnel move reported by The Athletic's Feldman, "#WVU’s chief of staff Alex Hammond is leaving to go work for Athletes First. Hammond, who helped WVU navigate into the Big 12, has a law degree from Northwestern & turned down several prominent college football program to go work with Athlete’s First." (link); Facebook's Reed promoted to VP of Global Sports & Media Partnerships. (link)
Washington Prez Cauce comments on the Rose Bowl appearance by her FB program & her overall perspective on college athletics, even as UW sports teams push to win nationally, "It imparts important life lessons about the power of teamwork and collaboration, about discipline and hard work, about the importance of preparation and timing. Sports teaches us how to lose with grace, and to use each loss as a learning moment and building block to success. ... Even when a win appeared impossible and their odds grim, they never quit, but kept fighting and fighting and fighting back, simultaneously showing us what character is all about and giving us the thrill of a lifetime. This is the essence of what intercollegiate sports is about. We must continue to value and nurture it, together." (link)
