Family School

January 10, 2019

Dear  Families,

I hope everyone had a warm, relaxing winter break and a happy start to the new year. It was wonderful to see everyone and be together again!
In tefilah we sang Hinei Mah tovu, "it is so good to be together brothers and sisters."  We also sang Veshameru and continue to talk about Shabbat and G-d.  With that in mind we now will be sending a Shabbat Box home to a different family each week.  In the box is everything you need to create a lovely Shabbat at home.  Included in the box is also everything you need for Havdalah.  Havdalah is a beautiful way to mark the end of Shabbat and prepare to start the new week.  Even if you have never enjoyed marking Shabbat or Havdalah you may want to try and see what your family would like to do.  All blessings, prayers, candles and spices are in the Shabbat Box.  There are also online addresses so you can also hear the prayers. When it is your family's turn please leave a little note in the box to share something you did. And, remember to bring the box back to Family School the next week.
We also continued to work on our pen pal letters.

Two upcoming events to plan to attend are:
January 22 at 5:00 pm parents are invited to come to our TuB'shvat Seder to celebrate all we receive from  trees.  Please plan to attend the seder.  It is a mystical journey of taste and smell.
Please mark your calendars also to come at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, February 12th.  The Family School Committee would like to meet and greet with our Family School Families. This is an opportunity to meet with board and committee members to discuss our Family School regarding any ideas, thoughts or concerns. Our hopes and wishes are that parents become more involved in our school and shul. For us to continue to be a thriving community it is important for us all to work together.  You and your family may think about volunteering at a shul event or you may have ideas for our Family School.  Please plan on attending this informal meet and greet to better our Family School and shul.

For snack we provide healthy choices of mini bagels, cream cheese, peanut butter and jelly. GF tortilla chips, veggies with dip, hummus and clementines or some other fruit and of course water. We appreciate donations towards snack as long as it is not junk food.  Yogurt, crackers, popcorn and any of the above can be dropped off on any day and saved for the next week.

Just a few reminders:

  • Snow Days, if Saugerties School District is closed or if they cancel after- school activities we are closed.  I will also send an email to confirm.
  • Please scroll down for the calendar.
  • If your child has a cell phone please tell them to turn it off during Family School.  If they have a problem they should speak with their teacher or me before they call home.
As I always say: We are committed to creating a warm, respectful and safe environment in which we can learn and grow together as a community.  The Family School is a place that gives life to the many values that we learn from the teachings of the Torah: kavod (respect), rachamim (compassion), and chesed (kindness).  We look forward to providing a loving, welcoming, enthusiastic environment in which Jewish children and their families from all backgrounds learn to practice Judaism in a meaningful and enlivening way, sparking curiosity and a love for learning.
