LEGISLATIVE UPDATE:  SSB 5354 (BILL CONCERNING HIGHLY CAPABLE PROGRAMS)
SSB 5354 addresses a number of areas impacting Highly Capable programs in our state, Related imagewhich include universal screening, transportation, multidisciplinary selection committees, collection/reporting of student data, administrator/counselor professional development, and teacher training programs.

On March 12, SSB 5354 passed the Senate on a unanimous 49-0 vote!  The bill has moved onto the House.

From the Washington Coalition for Gifted Education - 3/13/19 update:
"SSB 5354 has gone to the House, where it needs to be heard before the House Education Committee and the House Appropriations committee, receiving Do Pass recommendations, before going to Rules and then to the floor for a vote. In other words, the same process we just went through in the Senate."

Follow this bill as it progresses through the WA State Legislature!

From the National Association for Gifted Children:

PERFECTIONISM and GIFTEDNESS

"It's not uncommon for high-ability children to also be perfectionists.  Whether they worry about getting a drawing exactly right, earning all A's in school, or feeling helpless in fixing society's downfalls, approximately 20% of gifted children suffer from perfectionism to the degree it causes problems.

All perfectionism is not bad. Setting personal standards and pursuing excellence is important and healthy in many life situations. However, perfectionism can become unhealthy when it causes stress, pain, illness, procrastination, and underachievement.  While not inclusive, some causes of perfectionism include a desire to please others, early successes and no failures at a young age, and difficulty setting realistic goals."
