From SHCPA Leadership

WELCOME 2019!

The Shoreline Hi Cap Parent Association (SCHPA) continues into its third year of building community among parents and increasing awareness of the needs of our Highly Capable students in Shoreline schools.

We encourage our parent community this year to explore new ways of supporting your Highly Capable students and teachers!  Make an impact by:
  • assisting a teacher in the classroom
  • speaking at a school board meeting
  • engaging in a board game or in a new novel with your student at home
  • discussing Hi Cap initiatives with your local legislators
  • lending a hand as a volunteer with SHCPA!
Ask yourself:  how can you make a difference in your student's educational journey this year?

Gifted Ed Day:  Bring your family to Olympia on Friday, January 25!  Gifted Ed Day (GED) is an annual opportunity to meet fellow Hi Cap families, to learn about Hi Cap initiatives, and to get a glimpse into how state government works. Join us for meetings with our new District 32 legislators, Senator Jesse Salomon (Shoreline's former deputy mayor) and Rep. Lauren Davis. We still have openings available for the 12 noon Capitol Building tour!  Contact us if you're interested in the tour or have questions about GED. This is an excused absence day for Shoreline students who attend with their families.  Please refer to our website for more info.

Additionally, Shoreline was the venue for a meeting of Western Washington Hi Cap parent group leaders on January 17!  Through the support of the Northwest Gifted Child Association (NWGCA), approximately two dozen attendees (representing 10 different school districts) shared best practices, successes and challenges.
The group also discussed a new bill just introduced in the state Senate (SB 5354) that proposes a number of improvements to Washington's Highly Capable program.

Mark your calendars for our parent community meeting:  Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at 7 p.m. at the Meridian Park Elementary library (17077 Meridian Ave. N.).  All parents/guardians are welcome!  More details to be announced soon.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION
Summary of "High IQ Kids" from Amazon:  Profoundly gifted kids often get the least help in school. It’s assumed they’re smart enough to succeed on their own, plus teachers (and parents) feel out of their depth with these unique kids. A blend of personal stories and practical strategies, scholarly articles and entertaining essays from a community of voices—parents, educators, authors, researchers, and other experts—this book addresses the joys and challenges of raising and teaching, living with and understanding exceptionally gifted kids of all ages. Recommended for any adult who wants to know more (and may be desperate to know more) about high-IQ kids and how to support them, advocate for them, and meet their social, emotional, and learning needs. Contributors include Karen Rogers, Ph.D., Carolyn Kottmeyer, Sally Reis, Ph.D., Joyce VanTassel-Baska, Ed.D., Miraca U. M. Gross, Ph.D., and many more. (2008)

From the National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC):
Motivation and Learning

As a parent of a gifted child, you want to know how you can help your child stay engaged with learning. Think about those times when we are motivated to do our best.  It is usually when

  • we are interested in,
  • have an ability for, and
  • see a purpose in what we are doing.
Read more about helping our children to discover their interests, developing positive values for learning, linking those interests to school, and what to do if there are problems.
