DEAR McCALL FAMILY,
While scrolling through Philadelphia Eagles highlights on social media, I came across this extraordinary interview with Roger Federer. During the interview, Federer recalled his late tennis coach Peter Carter, who saw his potential and helped him reach his dreams. Federer teared up as he imagined what his late coach would say, if he could see him today.
Who made a difference in your life? Did you have a favorite teacher, who brought books to life? Did you have a coach who taught you the power of teamwork? When I volunteer with friends and neighbors at our school, or meet with a local nonprofit or business that wants to support McCall, I know that our students are blessed to have faculty, staff, community supporters, and families who believe in their potential and show it in their actions. We are one McCall community, loving and celebrating each student as they are, and giving them the best public education they can get so they can reach their dreams.
On Wednesday, January 9 at 7 PM, a small group of volunteers -- families and a community supporter-- will meet to plan this year's McCall Gala, our school's largest fundraising event. The Gala will take place at Reading Terminal Market on Friday, May 10, 2019 and there's so much work to be done. We need a volunteer graphic designer to help us with Gala materials. We're also looking for volunteers to knock on the doors of businesses in our catchment! CLICK HERE to read our most recent financial update. The past McCall HSA funded EducationWorks, which provides structured recess for students K-5. EducationWorks has expanded activities to provide restorative justice programming for students. The HSA must raise $53,000 to fund EducationWorks alone. Literacy Lab
As a part of the Read by 4th Initiative, Independence Branch Library is pleased to offer Literacy Lab, a small group literacy instruction program for students in 1st to 3rd grade who struggle to read on grade level.

Volunteering Requirements
All adults wishing to volunteer in the School District of Philadelphia will need to complete a Volunteer Orientation, as well as obtain various clearances. All the information can be found HERE: volunteer brochure; volunteer checklist;volunteer orientation; volunteer code of conduct.
Individuals will turn in their completed volunteer packets to the school secretary, so Principal McKenna can review and sign off on the packet. Only after the principal has signed off on the packet will the individual be allowed to volunteer. Volunteers will be required to submit updated clearances every 5 years.

Tickets will be sold during lunch the week before the gala.

McCall HSA will host the McCall Gala at Reading Terminal Market on Friday, May 10, 2019. Thank you so much to Iovine Brothers Produce, Molly Malloys, All About Events, and Reading Terminal Market market vendors for generously discounting their services to help raise funds for the public elementary school serving this catchment!
