Generalised Anxiety Disorder:  Aetiology, formulation and treatment

Dr Sarah Edelman

Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is a chronic disorder characterised by excessive worry and accompanying somatic and cognitive symptoms, including muscle tension, restlessness, fatigue, irritability and sleep disturbances. It is one of the most common co-morbid disorders, and is frequently associated with depression, anxiety disorders and medically unexplained symptoms. In spite of moderately high lifetime prevalence (4% – 7%), the diagnosis is frequently missed by mental health practitioners. Because of its chronic course and extensive symptomatology, GAD has the potential to cause substantial disability and dysfunction.

This session will provide an overview of GAD, the key conceptual models and contemporary treatment based on a combination approach, borrowing from CBT, Metacognitive Therapy, ACT and MBSR.

A pub discussion is a relaxed opportunity to observe a presentation on an interesting topic regarding cognitive behavioural therapy. There are opportunities for the willing to engage in a discussion relating to the topic towards the end of the presentation.
Dr Sarah Edelman PhD is a clinical psychologist in private practice, working predominantly with clients with anxiety disorders. Previously she worked at UTS, as a research psychologist and lecturer. She has published many articles in professional journals and mainstream media.

Sarah facilitates workshops and training programs for the Black Dog Institute, government and business organisations, and teaches ‘Change Your Thinking’ at Sydney University Centre for Continuing Education.

She is a frequent guest on 702 ABC radio, and her book ‘Change Your Thinking” is a best seller in the self-help genre. She has also co-authored ‘Good Thinking’ (a CBT self-help book for teenagers) and her third book, on managing anxiety and worry is due to be released in June 2019.
