Just ONE thing +
Book discounts fr my Publisher
Around this time of each calendar year, many are busy with New Year resolutions or "Vision Boards" and "Intentions" to improve themselves in 2019, or to visualize their goals and objectives. Some scoff at those who bother doing such things because no one can manage to stay on course after Week 3 anyways.

I usually am one of those who scoff, and roll my eyes.

This year, though, I tried to do something different. I thought it might be a good idea to do a Family Vision Board and Values. My husband thought it added on his to-do list but he had no choice and we had a brainstorm chat a few nights ago. Midway I drifted off, because I suddenly realized something about our discussions -- and indeed about the themes of many of these resolutions that people make. WeChat group discussions of things to change, new year events for setting goals etc also felt similar.

The realization was: we are incredibly self-centered.

Many of these goals or resolutions or visions have to do with our jobs, the way we parent, being mindful, doing our sports, letting go of this and that. All seem to stem from the self. Arguably, we must first learn to love ourselves before we know how to love others.

However, I wonder, can we not make one goal that would make this world a better place this year? If the sandtray in the photo was the world, what would you put there to make it a better place - not for yourselves, but for others?

Decide on just ONE thing that YOU could do to create social impact.

Maybe you want to bring your own bags to stop using so much plastic, or stop using straws for your cocktails. Or, maybe let your kids draw on used paper instead of buying rolls of "drawing paper"? Or actually go and help out at an orphanage instead of attending a feel-good charity ball. Just one thing.

As I reflect on this, I am thinking also of Bearapy and the work we continue to do raise awareness of mental health. Do workshops in companies suffice and how business-focused will I be to make ends meet? Or, can I devote some more energy to advocate and stir up discussions on mental wellness? Shape the discussions even? Lead them, dare I?

Dare you?

So, eight days into 2019, as you are fretting or being overly excited about the year, think not only of yourself, but also of the world and the state we are in now. There is lots to do. No point just blaming the economy. If you don't know where to start, I suggest you could read some of the the meaningful books from my Publisher to get some inspiration, especially because they are offering 50% OFF on ALL books!
