When you get a young group of people that believe, are passionate, they love each other, they sacrifice, they're committed to a purpose, you'd better look out, great things can happen, and that's what you saw tonight." (link); Alabama's Saban: "I don't think that one game necessarily defines who you are, and that's certainly what I'd like for our players to know. I think you learn a lot from experiences like this. We certainly didn't play very well tonight, and we had some issues. […] the seniors on this team have done a fantastic job of representing the University of Alabama. CFP expansion is not in the works for the immediate future, as presidents and commissioners who met yesterday were in "unanimous agreement that the playoff has been a tremendous success." Mississippi State Prez Keenum, chair of the playoff board of managers, added that it's "way too soon" to "know if that is even a possibility." He added: "It's fair to say the speculation about expansion has outdistanced the reality of what the commissioners and the presidents have discussed. If a decision were to be made down the road, the presidents would be the ones to make it and we are not there." Still, while expanding the bracket may not be imminent, presidents and commissioners have not closed the door to exploring the idea at a later date. SMU Prez Turner: "The mindset within the P5 right now is that four is where we are and we've got a good long contract and so for the time being four is where we'll be, but I do think that over time the closer review to eight will occur. t won't just be the American Conference, it will be No. 5 and No. 6, who also want to be in there. We'd like to think that if it's the top eight, that would increase the probability that the UCFs of the world would be eligible." Former Arizona MBB AC Richardson has taken a plea deal in his MBB-FBI situation by pleading guilty to one count of federal funds bribery. Sentencing potential: 18 to 24 months in jail. Richardson's attorney: "Book Richardson has positively affected the lives of young men and encouraged them to reach their potential for 25 years. While he will be judged for his actions in this case, this is something he did. It is not who he is." (link); Stadium's Goodman: "The misnomer is that Tony Bland and Book Richardson have to 'cooperate' or give anyone up in order to get plea deals. The feds just want the guilty plea. These guys don’t have to turn on anyone. […] The question now will be how hard the head coaches (i.e. Sean Miller and Andy Enfield) get hit for having assistants plead guilty. Head coaches accountable for assistants actions nowadays." (link)
The Daily Press' Teel reports the ACC appears set to schedule a trio of conference games to kick off the 2019 FB season, as well as the new ACC Network. Likely matchups for week one include Georgia Tech at Clemson on Thursday followed by Virginia at Pittsburgh on Friday and Virginia Tech at Boston College on Saturday. If this schedule comes to pass, it would mark the first time the league has opened the season with three conference games since 1996. Meanwhile, week one would also not include any FCS opponents for the first time in 13 years. All of which is part of Commish Swofford's plan to augment its marketability during FB's opening weekend with more enhancements to follow. (link)

Also of note, "...sources familiar with both companies say the unified business will be under immediate stress to grow its top line and bottom line." How? 1) Elimination of redundant positions; 2) Increased national sponsorship sales; 3) Growth of Campus+; and, 4) Expansion of Social+. (link); Smith continues with a look at Dyehard Fan Supply's plans as CEO Hough would "like to add 10 properties" in 2019. Biggest potential prize this year: Texas. (link); Smith chats with former Kansas State/Tennessee AD Currie on what the coming year could hold for the industry. Currie: "The potential outcomes of the Alston trial could create disruptive new challenges for Division I leaders. National sentiment for ‘pay-for-play’ centers on a handful of legacy institutional brands, marquee coaches, and a relatively small number of the 170,000 Division I student athletes. [...] How institutional leaders respond to Alston could dramatically reshape the 'big picture' of college sports as we know it." Collegiate Consulting's Wright points to more DII schools moving up to the DI ranks, "We know firsthand there are four conferences aggressively and actively looking to expand membership, and I believe you will see significant realignment." (link)
As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen its brand in southern California, Arizona State has put up six billboards along heavily trafficked areas in Los Angeles depicting FB AC Pierce, and student-athletes Robertson, Butler, Crosswell and Lole, all of whom are southern California natives. ASU Chief Business Development Officer Cagwin says of the billboards, which target alumni and boosters in the area: "We want the most traffic. You always hear there wasn't much ASU presence in past years in southern California. This was a way to help our donors get more involved, to let people know southern Cal is a priority for us, to get more people coming out for games and drive some new revenue." The billboards, which have been up for a few weeks and will remain in place throughout this month, have so far been displayed 30K times and garnered more than an estimated 700K impressions. (link)

Either USC AD Swann has relented & is allowing FB OC Kingsbury to interview for open NFL HC jobs or Kingsbury has resigned & is therefore free to do so. No one seems to quite know exactly what the situation is, but reports indicate Kingsbury is definitely interviewing. For what it's worth, Kingsbury's name has been removed from the USC website. (link); Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann with a lengthy explanation on why an antitrust situation could be at hand as the NFL & college ranks compete for coaching talent & Kingsbury was being denied access to the market. McCann also notes potential reputation damage for Swann. (link)
Following a disappointing 3-9 season, Colorado State FB HC Bobo decided that one of the Rams' problems was a lack of accountability. As a way to lead by example, Bobo consequently refused to accept a $100K raise due to him for the 2019 season, leaving his salary at $1.8M. Bobo: "I didn't think we were very disciplined, I didn't think we were very accountable to each other, and ultimately that's my responsibility. I thought it was a way to show accountability is a two-way street, in my opinion. It's easy to say it's this guy's fault or that guy's fault, but ultimately I'm the guy in charge and made a decision, called Joe on the telephone and told him that's what I wanted to do." CSU AD Parker, who agreed to the amended contract, observed: "That's not typical. That doesn't usually happen. Again, that just makes me realize we have a pretty special person who recognizes his own personal accountability and doesn't feel good about what occurred this season, and is pointing all of his efforts into 2019." Florida State Interim AD Coburn indicates he'll use a search committee to help identify & hire a replacement for longtime & wildly successful Baseball HC Martin. Coburn also says he'd like to make a hire very quickly after the season is done. As for Martin, "I am sure there will be moments of appreciation, but I think everyone that knows me that once the game starts, that nothing will change - the focus is on the game and getting better every game." (link)
With Baseball season only a month away, Louisville skipper McDonnell spends time with AthleticDirectorU’s Walsh and details his leadership philosophy of, "To love and to serve." McDonnell reviews the key traits of competitiveness and toughness as he considers the nature vs. nurture argument for each. McDonnell also touches on how his role has changed as the attitudes and behaviors of the modern student-athletes continue to evolve. McDonnell: "Can you find joy in the success of your teammates? That's impressive to me. […] In this generation, we have to connect. We have to adapt. I text more than ever. We have to be able to communicate our guys. They have to know you care about them." Michigan State MBB HC Izzo remarked on the one-game suspension meted out to Penn State MBB HC Chambers, who last week pushed a Nittany Lions student-athlete during a timeout. Izzo called the suspension a "joke" and added, sarcastically: "I mean, if he punched him? Oh, God bless, put him in prison. I mean, you see me in the timeouts. I get down on both knees now and genuflect and say a little prayer, and ask if it’s OK if I can tell them what they did wrong.” He added: "The world is too soft, it’s too fragile, there are too many people that analyze every single thing. ... I know one thing, if somebody pushes my kid over something like that, trying to get his attention because he’s doing something wrong? I’m gonna say thank you, that’s what I’m gonna say.” In a subsequent discussion with The Athletic's Quinn, Izzo noted, more seriously, that the line in how to treat players is "drawn with the relationship that you have with people." Different players require different methods of communication, Izzo went on, acknowledging that the key to getting through is to change with the times without changing who you are. He reiterated that laying hands on a player is out of bounds, but said for those who aren't getting the message: "I don’t know how you impose discipline and still do something that few people can do. It’s not easy to hold people accountable anymore. It’s not easy." (link)

(link); UIC names Anagnost as its new Women's Soccer HC. Anagnost has HC experience at Mississippi State, Miami and Central Michigan. (link); NC State promotes Henes to women's track and field HC and announces that longtime former HC Geiger will assume the role of director of track and field. (link); Pacific awards VB HC Gibbons a three-year contract extension through 2021. AD Lucas noted she was pleased with the team's development and looks "forward to watching the program continue to grow and compete at the highest level." (link)

Former FB student-athlete & current NFL player Matthews, "He treated my family like his own, and I know many other VU athletes would say the same. If I needed anything during my years at Vandy, and afterward, he was always willing to help." Former Men's Golf student-athlete & PGA Tour mainstay Snedeker, "He is the smartest guy in the room, but he never acted like it and always treated me like family." (link)
Nebraska is pushing to expand its "Husker Air Fleet" to allow FB, MBB, WBB & Volleyball coaches access to private planes for more efficient national recruiting. A pitch deck created for donors who could contribute flight hours in the form of fractional ownership or jet cards show a potential 100% tax deduction or "Priority points -- though no tax deduction. Three points will be awarded for every $100 cash or gift in kind donation in the current year; one priority point for each $100 cash or gift in kind donated in previous years. In addition, donors who contribute at least $10,000 to the Husker Air Fleet will also receive an exclusive invitation to private events with coaches." (link)
Both Washington State AD Chun & Cougars Prez Schulz are interested in expanding alcohol sales at Martin Stadium. Schulz: "We can talk about it as a revenue generator, and of course that’s a positive, but we’re also competing (to get people in the stands) with 70-inch HDTV flat-screens … [Consider] the whole day-long stadium experience and to me, alcohol sales, including the ability to get some unique beers, wine, locally produced … is all an important part of what we need to be doing moving ahead." D1Baseball's Rogers with an in-depth recap from the ABCA as Florida HC O'Sullivan encouraged his peers to "talk to your AD" about the vote on a third full-time AC. O'Sullivan: "If this does not get approved now, it will probably never get approved. So I know we’re all at different levels, some schools can pay X amount, some schools can pay this amount, but at the end of the day it’s a better system than we have now." Louisville's McDonnell on the "middle ground" of pushing back the recruitment of prospective student-athletes until after their sophomore year in high school starts, "Let’s let them get their high school career underway, get that first summer underway, and now as they start their sophomore year, we think it’s time to get involved and start building relationships." (link)
Georgia Tech Prez Peterson announces he will retire this summer, ending his 10-year run at the helm in Atlanta. Peterson's current annual compensation is $1,135,710 and come April he will meet the threshold for full retirement benefits from the state. Peterson has been active in various NCAA roles, including chair of the organization's board of governors. (link); Elsewhere in the Peach State, Savannah State Prez Dozier will also retire at the end of June. Assoc. VC of Legal Affairs for the University System of Georgia Ballard-Washington will serve as interim, effective July 1. (link)

(link); Both Alabama QBs suffered high ankle sprains this year and both had expedited recovery times thanks to Knotless Syndesmosis TightRope Implant System, a minimally invasive procedure developed by Naples-based Arthrex. (link); According to him, Montana State MBB and FB play-by-play broadcaster Sanderson left his position last month to help an ill family member out of state, but the resignation comes amid sexual harassment claims made by a former Missoulian reporter. Sanderson denies the allegations. (link); Virginia Tech FB adds Rhode Island to its 2019 home slate to replace the canceled ECU game. (link); SportsBusiness Daily's Karp promoted to Managing Editor, Digital. (link); The first round NFL wild card game between the Eagles and the Bears pulled a 22.9 overnight on NBC - the best for any NFL Playoff on the channel since 2006 and the best wild card game for NBC in 25 years.
