THE HIGHLIGHTS

Trump is going into overdrive.

THE BACKGROUND.

A couple weeks ago, Congress signed off on a stopgap funding bill to keep the gov from being shut down. Problem, since Prez Trump said ‘I want it I want it I want it’ and announced that he’d only approve a budget plan that includes billions of dollars in funding for his wall on the US-Mexico border. Something Congress was not willing to give. Flash forward to today, and the gov is entering its 18th day of being shut down. There’s no end in sight.

THE HAPPENINGS.

Today, Prez Trump will be on everyone’s TV to deliver a “presidential address” on everything that’s going on with the gov and the US-Mexico border. Expect to hear the problem described as a “crisis” and “emergency.” And expect to see Dems take the mic for a rebuttal. Oh, and look forward to seeing the Prez head to the border later this week to see the situation up close and personal.

THE REACTION.

Nobody can agree on what to do about the border. What people can agree on: Trump is kicking into overdrive this week to plead his case - that what’s happening at the US-Mexico border is a national emergency. Because, funding. Still unclear whether the Prez would be able to legally get the funds he needs from the Defense Dept. Either way, expect to be seeing all of this in court sometime soon.

SO…?

All signs point to Trump declaring a national emergency. TBD on whether the court agrees.

THE ACTION

EUROPE: Recently, Frank Magnitz - a German far-right MP - was attacked by a group of at least three masked men. The men reportedly knocked Magnitz unconscious. Now, officials are saying they believe the attack was politically motivated. In other news, it just came out that banks and other financial bizes are moving around $1 trillion (yes, with a ‘t’) out of the UK due to Brexit. Roughly 10% of the total assets of the UK banking sector. This comes just two months before Brexit’s set to kick in. Bad omen. Speaking of which, yesterday, the World Bank prez resigned. Not good, since the US is usually in charge of appointing a new prez - but Trump’s not a fan of international organizations like the World Bank. Stay tuned.

POLITICS: Yesterday, Israel PM Netanyahu said ‘no really - I’m innocent’ and used a prime-time address to clap back at a series of corruption allegations. Quick refresher: a few months ago, Israeli police recommended indicting Netanyahu for doing lots of shady things. So weeks ago, Netanyahu announced that he’d be speeding up Israel’s election date. And now, says it’d be “unjust” to indict him ahead of the elections. Meanwhile, Turkey’s not backing down. The other day, the US announced that it wouldn’t pull troops out of Syria until the Turkish gov guaranteed the safety of the Kurds, a minority group in the area. To which Turkey said ‘not a chance.’ Standstill.

WORLD: Recently, Kim Jong Un said ‘surprise!’ and made a sudden visit to China. This comes as the US’s relationship with North Korea is...not all that great. No word yet on this latest news from Prez Trump. Meanwhile, all eyes are on Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun. She’s a Saudi woman who recently fled to Thailand - allegedly after being abused - and barricaded herself in her hotel room in a bid for asylum. Now, it looks like she’ll be allowed to stay in Thailand temporarily under the protection of the United Nations refugee agency, who’ll be studying her asylum claims.

WHAT TO KNOW

Crickets:” what could be behind the Cuba ‘sonic attack’ that left diplomats with dizziness, vertigo, and pain and ringing in the ears. Insects, evil.

SAY WHAT?

“I’m sorry!” - Emma Stone at the Golden Globes, after Sandra Oh made a whitewash joke about Stone being cast as a character apparently of Chinese and Hawaiian descent. Apology accepted.
