UA Team Uncovers Promising Lead In Treating Glioblastoma

A team of UA researchers who looked for genetic differences between glioblastoma cells from long- and short-term survivors discovered that those who survived longer had a protein that might be targeted to increase survival in all patients. “I was curious to know how genes are differentially expressed in patients who live longer,” said Dr. Michael Hammer, Co-Director of the UA Cancer Center Genomics Shared Resource and Associate Director of Omics at the BIO5 Institute.

Military Hopes 3D Printing Bones Can Help Combat Veterans' Injuries

Dr. John A. Szivek, BIO5 member and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the UA College of Medicine, is working with a five year, $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense, to study how to heal shattered bones, using a combination of 3D printing and adult stem cells. This will help injured combat veterans, cancer patients, and victims of serious injuries.
