Hebrew Classes

We are offering two exciting Hebrew study opportunities this January!

Continuing Hebrew ~
We are offering a free Continuing Hebrew class for the month of January. It will run Thursdays, January 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31, 6-7:30 PM. This class is open to all, and will be taught by Anne Hartheimer. We'll be continuing to work on reading and grammar that helps you understand the prayerbook and eventually to be able to read from Torah and Tanach (the Bible). For those of you who are interested, we'll also learn how to write in cursive, so you can take notes as you learn more Hebrew.

Intermediate Hebrew: Reading Mishnah ~ Some of our intermediate Hebrew students have begun reading Mishnah Avot, or "Ethics of the Fathers", a classic rabbinic text which traditionally serves as an introduction to the Talmud (and is full of quotes you will probably recognize even if you've never read it). We read line by line with the aid of reference materials in order to absorb the language holistically, and discuss the meaning of sayings attributed to the earliest rabbis in this oft-cited key text. This is an ongoing learning group. If you are interested in joining, please email office@templeisraelgreenfield.org

Family Shabbat Dinner
& Puppet Show

Families with young children are invited for a special First Friday Shabbat Dinner with Temple Israel's Hebrew School and Roots & Branches Preschool program. At 5:30 PM, puppeteer Anna Sobel will present her show 'Fairies of the Seasons,' which tells a fun and magical story about how the trees change at different times of the year. We'll talk about the Jewish holiday of Tu B'Shvat and how the trees are preparing to come alive again. After the puppet show families will enjoy a simple, nourishing Shabbat dinner, blessings, and songs. Community members of all ages are welcome. Vegetarian potluck contributions appreciated, but not required.

Appearances by authors Michael Hoberman
& Daniel Yalowitz
