LiveOcean comes to the Salish Sea!
A new version of the UW Live Ocean model has been released! Alongside greater spatial resolution comes the coverage of the Salish Sea in the model's 3-day forecasts of variables like aragonite saturation state, oxygen, nutrients, and phytoplankton. Forecasts are available for many depths, including a bottom contour. See the model on NVS, and check out the LiveOcean homepage for more information and some great animations.
New buoy data online at NVS!
Kwakshua Channel buoy live on NVS

NANOOS member Hakai Institute has a new buoy at the mouth of the Kwakshua Channel.  Hakai scientist Wiley Evans had the idea of retrofitting a furloughed buoy for new observations in British Columbia, north of Vancouver Island. It was deployed in its current location earlier this year, and now its data on temperature, salinity, pCO2, and weather can be seen in near-real time on NVS!
Cha'Ba ready for winter

In mid October, a team led by Zoltan Szuts (UW & NANOOS) redeployed the winter version of the Cha'Ba buoy 15 miles off of La Push, WA, The tougher winter model is better equipped to weather winter storms while continuing to bring you near-real time oceanographic conditions on NVS, including temperature, salinity, oxygen, pH, pCO2, chlorophyll, and weather variables.
NANOOS Participates in NOAA West Watch
NOAA's Western Regional Collaboration Team hosted the November 2018 West Watch webinar, which summarized coastal environmental conditions and impacts in the Western Region. The webinar included contributed slides from the NANOOS, CeNCOOS, and SCCOOS regions, who regularly report on their local coastal ocean conditions. View the webinar slide set here.

NANOOS Engagement Activities
NVS Forecasts Aid Surfers

NANOOS was invited to speak at this year's Surfrider Foundation Cascadia Chapters Conference at Lake Crescent, WA on October 30. Outreach Chair Rachel Wold presented the new Surfers App, which was developed with the local surfing community and Surfrider members, to dozens of Surfrider chapter leads from chapters all over the Pacific Northwest. The app, which shows data on eight aspects of waves, as well as tide and weather information, was developed with the local surfing community.
NVS Boaters App Keeping Boaters Safe

The Semiahmoo Yacht Club invited NANOOS Outreach Chair Rachel Wold to present the NVS Boaters App to it's members as well as those of the Birch Bay Village Yacht Club and the local Power Squadron in Blaine, WA on November 7th.

NANOOS Engages New Scientists

NANOOS staff and volunteers participated in the annual Discover Science Weekend at the Seattle Aquarium on November 11th. NANOOS offered NVS demonstrations of all our user-defined apps to gain insight on current and forecasted coastline, estuarie, ocean, and weather conditions.
We also hosted the popular "Build a Buoy Challenge," which gives kids of all ages the opportunity to design and build PVC buoys, and test their structure's "seaworthiness" using golf balls and a tub of water.

Upcoming Outreach with the Boating Community!

Join us January 11-13 for the 59th annual Portland Boat Show at the Portland Expo Center where NANOOS staff will be presenting the NVS Boaters and NVS Tuna Fishers Apps, as well as other tools and information. See you there!
NANOOS Outreach Chair Rachel Wold will be giving a seminar the 2019 Seattle Boat Show on January 31, where she will be teaching attendees how to use the NVS Boaters App to safely navigate local waters.
