$250K Caltrans grant to address pedestrian safety on Highway 9

We're getting 2019 kicked off right for Highway 9.
In late December, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) announced it has received $250,000 in grant money from Caltrans for pedestrian safety projects on Highway 9 in the San Lorenzo Valley. Crosswalks will be improved at the highway's intersections with Redwood Drive (Felton), midblock between Graham Hill Road and Kirby Street (Felton), Clear Creek Road (Brookdale), and at Forest Street and Pool Drive (Boulder Creek.) Improvements will vary by site to include installation of high-visibility striping and signage, advance warning flashing beacons, and rectangular rapid flash beacons.

SLV community meetings set for draft Highway 9 Corridor Plan

The RTC will host two meetings to receive public input on the draft Highway 9/San Lorenzo Valley Complete Streets Corridor Plan, which will provide a vision, guiding principles and strategies for improving circulation in and around the Highway 9 corridor. Please join us at one or both of the following meetings:

  • 6-7:30 p.m. January 31 at Felton Community Hall, 6191 Highway 9, Felton.
  • 6-7:30 p.m. February 6 at Boulder Creek Elementary's Multipurpose Room, 400 West Lomond Street.

For more information about the plan, visit the RTC online.

Planning for Boulder Creek Library renovation underway

Santa Cruz Public Libraries and the County of Santa Cruz will host a community meeting January 17 to gather input on the design of renovations for the Boulder Creek Library Branch. Doors will open at the branch, located at 13390 W. Park Avenue, at 5:30 p.m., and the presentation and discussion will be from 6-7 p.m. Improvements for the Boulder Creek branch, as well as construction of a new branch in Felton, are made possible by Measure S funds approved by voters in June 2016. Revenue from Measure S has been much stronger than first estimated. This means we will dedicate an estimated $1.6 million in Measure S funding to the Boulder Creek project rather than the $500,000 originally set aside. So please join us on January 17 to learn more about this exciting project.

Second Harvest Food Drive will support over 200,000 meals

We can be so proud of our County family for raising at least $51,400 and donating more than 780 pounds of food during our annual Second Harvest Holiday Food Drive. That generosity will lead to more than 200,000 meals being provided for the community, which exceeds the 185,000 goal we set. Thank you to all who donated money and food during the month of November, and a big appreciation goes to the Food Drive Executive Committee: Jillian Ritter, Mirna Guerrero, Benito Mendoza, Amy Miyakusu and Adam Spickler. (Above, Board of Supervisors staff joined Supervisor Ryan Coonerty and me at Second Harvest in Watsonville to package food.)

Representing our seniors is a privilege; volunteers welcome

Serving on the Advisory Council for the Area Agency on Aging is fulfilling in so many ways. Much appreciation goes to all the hard-working staff and volunteers of the Seniors Council, including (seen here Dec. 13 at the AAA/Seniors Council Joint Board Meeting) Jane Schwickerath, president of the Seniors Council Board; Clay Kempf, executive director of Seniors Council and Area Agency on Aging; and Mickie Luna, vice chair of the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council. Volunteer opportunities are available.

Felton Community Meeting
Feb. 20

Our office will co-host a Felton Community Meeting from 6:30-8 p.m. February 20 at Felton Community Hall, 6191 Highway 9, on the topic of homelessness. We know residents throughout Santa Cruz County are seeing and experiencing increasing impacts of homelessness, and the same is true of the San Lorenzo Valley. We'll provide an update on how the County's public health leaders and nonprofit partners are working to address homelessness.

METRO acquires 14 VTA buses

Santa Cruz METRO recently acquired 14 buses from Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority, including 10 for the Highway 17 Express Route and four high-capacity articulated buses for routes that service UC Santa Cruz. The transfer of buses will help METRO replace older buses and improve system reliability. These particular buses are important because they help reduce pollution and address climate change. The Highway 17 Express and UCSC routes are among the most well-used routes, helping to cut back on congestion around UCSC and offering Silicon Valley commuters a stress-free ride that increases their productivity with on-board WiFi. Offering express service on Highway 17 also cuts down on the number of single-occupancy vehicles making the trek over the hill during the morning and afternoon rush hours.
