News & Notes

The Rite Aid on Glendale Boulevard received a shoutout during this year's Golden Globes, with hosts Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg arranging for some stars in the audience to receive flu shots from the Echo Park pharmacy. Men and women in white coats and syringes walked from the stage and into the Beverly Hills ballroom, offering shots to Willem Dafoe and Linda Cardellini. (Vanity Fair reported the shots were in fact fake.) Meanwhile, Mallory Carra on the website Bustle questioned the wisdom of getting an Echo Park flu shot in Beverly Hills, since a Rite Aid can be found about a mile from the Beverly Hilton. Why have your shots get stuck in crosstown traffic?

Former ESPN host Jemele Hill accepted a marriage proposal from boyfriend Ian Wallace on the helipad atop the Citibank building, which offers a view of Echo Park Lake and the downtown skyline. Hill announced the news on Instagram, saying the engagement is part of her "year of transition." "I left a job, started a new job, moved to a new city and now … I’m engaged to the love of my life,” she wrote. Hill, who now writes for the Atlantic, departed the sports cable network after making Twitter comments criticizing President Trump.

Residents across Echo Park, Angelino Heights and parts of Silver Lake lost water service for several hours last week following a water main break, The Eastsider reported. An 88-year-old, 24-inch cast-iron water main broke near Sunset and Beaudry, ripping apart the pavement and flooding a mini-mall parking lot. The cause of the break remains unknown. But the LADWP said it sees more main breaks in fall and winter months as colder water from the Eastern Sierra Nevada flows through its system. “The colder water causes the pipes to shrink very slightly, known as thermal contraction, which can cause some pipes to break,” a utility spokesperson said.

Newly published author and Echo Park resident Constantine Singer spoke to The Eastsider about "Strange Days," a science fiction novel set in the neighborhood that he has called home for about 20 years. In some respects, the young adult novel serves as a metaphor for neighborhood gentrification and change, said Singer. "We were part of the invitation to change and some of the ideas and acts of proprietary entitlement I continue to see and hear in the name of 'highest and best use' shows up in the book."

One person was evaluated by paramedics after a fire broke out in a 2-story home with “excessive personal storage” in the 1800 block of Morton, The Eastsider reported. One occupant suffered an unspecified injury but declined to be transported for medical treatment. Several pets were rescued from the home but status of other animals "remains in question,” the LAFD said.

A 33-year-old homeless woman was found dead in a yard in the 1100 block of W. Edgeware in Angelino Heights on the morning of Dec. 17, the Los Angeles County Coroner said. An investigation into the cause of Christine Marie Gonzales’ death is pending.

Echo Park Storefront Report: The new owners of the Brite Spot will be adding dinner service and keeping the diner on Sunset open until 10 pm seven days a week starting Jan. 14 The once late-night hang had been closing at 3 pm in recent years ... XL3 Vintage Clothing, which specializes in vintage/used sports clothing from the '70s, '80s & '90s, has closed its Echo Park shop and moved to a new location near Staples Center. No word on what's going to happen to their old space, which is located on Sunset where it crosses over Glendale ...  El Prado appears to be changing owners. The Sunset bar's beer and wine license is being transferred to a company controlled by Nicholas Fisher. The small, narrow bar that once catered primarily to Latino immigrants was purchased more than a decade ago by Mitchell Frank, founder of The Echo nightclub across the street
