Reviewing season wrap-up notes
|
|
At the close of each season our whole farm crew gets together for a meeting to discuss what went well, what we could do better, and what we should try to change for the future. We just did it yesterday for '18. It's awesome to have the time with all nine heads in thinking mode, scheming about improving any little or big thing we can. It was also awesome to realize how many of last year's proposed improvements came to fruition and really did make our lives easier or better.
Some of the things mentioned that were new or better in 2018:
- handing more responsibilities over to those who wanted it
- mid-season check-in meeting and mid-season bonuses
- vacuum seeder purchase for greenhouse made seeding way faster
-flame weeder for weed control did a great job
-new nice box truck that didn't make us fear for our lives
-yoga at lunchtime (Greta! Thank you!)
-adding a second Farm Member potluck so customers could see the farm
-better organization of tools, materials, paperwork
-better communication between crew members
-great maps of where all the crop varieties were planted
-fastest inventory and donation process that we've ever had
-and the best crew we've ever had - everyone cares about the work, cares about each other, has real interest in farming, and is a pleasant person that you'd want to spend time with. Dream team 2018.
One thing I kept thinking over and over when we were remarking upon what went well, or what was better this year than before, is that it all had to do with the people. We had a lot of returning team members from previous years, and in 2019 we expect everyone will stay with the farm. As of right now, there are 26 years of Chickadee Creek Farm experience in the production crew, and that makes our work so much more efficient, easy, and enjoyable.
Eat well and may you enjoy your work as much as we do,
Jess, writing for Chelsea, Darci, Kelsey, Kyle, Lara, Monica, Morgan, and Scott
