Asheville Waldorf School All School News | January, 9th 2019
On behalf of Asheville Waldorf School,
we wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year!

“On New Year’s Eve it is always fitting to remember how past and future are linked together in life and in the existence of the world, how past and future are linked in the whole life of the Cosmos of which man is a part, how past and future are linked in every fraction of that life with which our own individual existence is connected, is interwoven through all that we were able to do and to think during the past year, and through all that we are able to plan for the coming year."
~ Rudolf Steiner, 31st December 1919

Once again our classrooms will be open to existing and prospective families to experience the magic of Waldorf Education right here in Asheville. Guests choose from a selection of 20 different workshops and lectures ranging in topic from Early Childhood, Math, Puppetry, Painting, Handwork, Movement and much more!  This is an event to share with your friends; please invite them to join

Keep an eye out, sign-up information and class descriptions coming later this week!
NEW ATTENDANCE PROCEDURE

Beginning next week, AWS will begin a new procedure for recording attendance at both campuses. After classes have begun and teachers have recorded who is present in their classrooms, the administrative staff will copy a record of these lists. When a student is not present in class, and the teacher has not received prior notice of an absence or tardiness for the day, the administrative staff will call the home of the student to check in with their parents/guardians. Phone calls for Azalea students will begin by 9:00 am and calls for Magnolia students will begin by 9:30 am. This is to help ensure the safety of all of our students and to build strong communication channels between our families and the school.

Health and Wellness
With the cold, flu, and tummy-bug season upon us, we want to remind everyone of our school illness policy.

You can find the policy in its entirety on
the website including specific illnesses and wait times before returning to school.

Student Illness Policy (from our Parent Handbook, page 38)
Please report all illnesses, symptoms, and timing of the onset of an illness to the School Administrator. This information is invaluable in caring for your child, and in protecting the other children in the school community. Please do not bring your child to school if she has had a fever of 100 or greater, or has been vomiting in the past 24 hours.

An ill child should be kept at home. Please call the school by 8:30 a.m. on days your child will be absent. If a child becomes ill while at the school, parents will be contacted to pick up their child. Azalea Mountain does not have facilities or staff to care for children, who are too ill to remain in class. At the beginning of the school year, please secure two or three support people, who are willing to care for your child in the event that you are unable to stay home.

Children should remain at home for 24 hours after a fever breaks. Any child who contracts a contagious illness such as measles, mumps, chicken pox or strep throat must be kept at home until the illness is no longer in the contiguous state. Please inform the teacher of the illness, so that other parents can be alerted. A note from your health care provider stating the date your child may return to class is required. Any child who contracts a communicable disease such as head lice, pink eye, impetigo or pinworms must be receiving medical treatment before returning to class. In the case of head lice, all lice and eggs must be removed from the child’s hair after treatment, and before the child returns to school.

For a list of illnesses and symptoms (including further information regarding those mentioned above) to be considered before bringing a child to school, please refer to Appendix C.
