Your Area Partnership: what it is and how to get involved

Elementary Food Hygiene - £20
Saturday 19th January 9 am - 4 pm

This course is for anyone who has to prepare, cook or serve food either as a member of staff or a volunteer.  
This is an essential requirement for staff and volunteers who have to prepare, cook or serve food. The course will cover various topics including an introduction to food hygiene, personal hygiene and working habits of the food handler etc. This course content will be delivered by an experienced tutor who will take the participants through the required syllabus.
     * Participants will need to bring their own lunch.

Trustee Training (part 1) 
Tuesday 22nd January 5 pm - 7.30 pm

Our training is for those who have recently become a Trustee, are interested in becoming or wish to refresh their understanding of being a Trustee.
This training is in two parts and focuses on expectations of Trustees; the first part looks at the general duties and the second part concentrates on specific duties.

Planning your Event 
Tuesday 22nd January 7 pm - 8.30 pm

This session is open to anyone planning an event in East Lothian, whether it’s big or small, indoors or outdoors or both.
The session will provide guidance on your responsibility for planning a successful event, covering essential items i.e. risk assessments, insurance, first aid etc.

Health Issues in the Community (8 weeks)

The course aims to enable participants to develop their understanding of the range of factors that affect their health and the health of their communities e.g. employment, education, housing and disability.

Emergency First Aid - £20
Saturday 26th January 9.30 am - 1.30 pm

This introductory course is designed for anyone who is keen to have basic first aid knowledge and how to look after a casualty whilst awaiting an ambulance.
This is an emergency first aid course so will include:
  • managing an incident
  • priorities of first aid
  • CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation)
  • disorders of circulation
  • disorders of the airways
  • control of bleeding, burns and scalds

Making the most of Twitter 
Monday 28th January 6 pm - 7.30 pm

This course is for individuals and representatives of groups who are considering using Twitter as an information sharing/engagement tool or want to get more out of their existing Twitter account.

Scottish Mental Health First Aid (6 sessions until 21st March)
Thursday 7th February 5.30 pm - 8.30 pm

This course is aimed at anyone who is likely to be working with or supporting individuals suffering from mental health issues.
Mental Health First Aid is basically a First Aid course for Mental Health, in the way that a normal First Aid course is for physical health. At the end of this course the delegates should be able to spot common mental health symptoms in others (and themselves), what to do until professional help is available, know about the recovery from mental ill health, know about the links between alcohol and drug abuse and mental health and to understand the importance of good listening skills.

Autism Awareness 
Thursday 7th February 7 pm - 9 pm

Autism Awareness is a 2 hour session run by Lynne Melville Senior Project Worker from Caern Project Learning Disabilities & Autism Services that aims to improve the knowledge, confidence and resilience of parents, carers and professionals in working with autistic children and young people. We will cover issues around various ‘challenging behaviours’ looking at causes and strategies to try.

How the Health Service works from Holyrood to your GP/Dentist/Chemist
Thursday 14th February 6 pm - 8.45 pm

This course is aimed at members of the public (carers, patients, volunteers) and Council and NHS staff who work in the community and are interested in shaping service improvement.

This training session looks at the importance of the structure of the NHS and its East Lothian Council partner and how responsibilities are broken down and shared.

Area Partnerships and Tenants and Residents Associations: How we can work together to make a real difference

This course is aimed at Tenants and Resident Association (TRA) members who want to know more about Area Partnerships and how they work alongside TRA’s. The course is informal and seeks to improve their understanding of the purpose of joint working and how we can tackle the impacts of poverty and inequality together.

Using Girfec and SHANARRI in everyday settings

This course is aimed at Childcare practitioners including childminders, playgroups, after school clubs  and those running voluntary clubs.
This workshop will explore our understanding of Girfec and SHANARRI and what these terms mean in the everyday setting rather than in crisis.

Carer Friendly Communities: A conversation with lunch

This conversation about carers is open to anyone of any age who lives, works or visits in East Lothian and is interested in carers, caring and wants to help make our communities more supportive of carers. You don’t have to be a carer to come along.
