Out-of-Home viewership for the title matchup was 20% higher than any of the NFL Wild Card games or NFL Monday Night kicks this season. (link, link); Average resale ticket price: $439. The Bond Buyer's Williamson & Sigo write on the downsizing of college FB stadiums around the nation. Ohio U. economics professor Vedder: "My guess is that the risk factors associated with stadium bonds is going to be moving in the negative direction. There will be a general rise in bond yield along with a perception of increased risk." There's currently $3B worth of bonds in the market for facility projects as specific situations at Arkansas & Tennessee are reviewed. More Vedder, "It goes beyond football stadiums. College enrollments are down, and debt is up. They’ve gone on these building sprees. Intercollegiate athletics, which until now have been able to do any damn thing they want, I think that’s beginning to be scrutinized. If I were a university president I would be very cautious about building a new stadium." (link)
Washington state Representative Stokesbary has submitted a bill for the upcoming legislative cycle that would allow student-athletes to be paid for marketing appearances. Stokesbary doesn't expect the measure to pass, but wants to start a greater conversation on the topic. Gonzaga AD Roth: "Until I get a chance to get more clarification, it’s just premature in the process to comment." (link)
Long read from Inside Higher Ed's Seltzer on the impact of the new federal tax laws on college campuses, though some experts still say it's too early to see how everything will shake out. Husch Blackwell partner Miceli: "In the last year, there’s been a lot of creative thinking going on within the development department, the athletic department and the lawyers trying to deal with these new requirements. But it’s just been a year now of trying to get their brains wrapped around them." Withers tax expert Roy: "At the higher end, the law is the same for everybody. The client that is $50 million or $100 million in net worth, they’re not really worried about this sort of adjusted gross income limit on deductions." More. (link)
Could the Oakland Raiders relocate to Tucson & Arizona Stadium for a stop over next season before the permanent move to Las Vegas? Local attorney & Arizona Bowl creator Farhang got the approval from Arizona AD Heeke & Prez Robbins before reaching out to Raiders Prez Badain. Farhang: "I’d really like to bring our Tucson leaders to Oakland, meet with the Raiders brass and show them why this is the perfect Raiders move. It would be totally unexpected and out of the box. It would be visionary in a lot of ways, like their late owner (Al Davis) was in so many ways." (link)

USC FB OC & former Texas Tech HC Kingsbury exits to become HC of the Arizona Cardinals, owes the Trojans $150K for breaking his contract. The L.A. Times' Plaschke takes aim at USC AD Swann, "An experienced athletic director would never have hired someone with Kingsbury’s celebrated cachet without some contractual assurances he would stay. […] A savvy college administrator would have understood that without those contractual assurances, Kingsbury would be vulnerable to the several head coaching openings that pop up in the NFL every January. He would have known that everyone would be looking for Sean McVay clones like Kingsbury, and he would have waited until Black Monday cleared up before trying to hire him. [...] They should be better than that. They must be better than that." (link, link)
Idaho State FB student-athlete Miller submitted a complaint to the university back in November on the grounds of "inappropriate communication from a coach, a lack of playing time, an alleged assault by a coach during an away game, and the student-athlete being incorrectly informed about his eligibility status." Bengals AC Staggs identified as the coach in question & was removed from his position. However, the complaint also points to HC Phenicie for "hammer punching" Miller on the shoulder pads multiple times that led to bruising. The university says it will formally wrap up its investigation within 90 days. (link)
"Unlike the situation with the Ole Miss transfers, the process of obtaining a waiver for Justin isn’t going to drag on for months. This is a high priority for Coach [Ryan] Day, and it’s my top priority at the moment. I’m confident the process will move quickly and that the NCAA will be able to make a decision on OSU’s waiver request much sooner than most people might think." That's notable attorney Mars on the eligibility of Georgia-to-Ohio State FB transfer student-athlete Fields. (link)

North Carolina's Dean Dome renovations are not part of the school's current $4.25B campaign and, per AD Cunningham, not going to happen until the campaign is closed, which is expected to happen by the end of 2022. The Campaign for Carolina has raised $2.3B so far. In 2015 the Tar Heels released renderings of what potential Dean Dome renovations could look like, but it will be a while before any movement happens. (link)
Florida Atlantic AD White says a home-and-home with a 'Power 5' school is "definitely something we'd be very open to." Miami (FL) is the only such team to ever visit FAU Stadium and drew the largest crowd in its history (30,321). White: "You figure out years down the road what’s open, you meet with your coach and figure out where do we feel like we can have a decent matchup and then also, what are they willing to pay." He adds that though he is watching what brother Danny is doing up the road at UCF, the process is "also within the perspective of where we are and what every other school like us is doing and what makes sense for our program. ... You’d love to have one where your fans can travel, but it’s also good to be in places that have a little bit of history. I think that’s cool for our student-athletes so there’s so many factors involved." The Owls play at Ohio State next season for $1.4M, up from the $1.2M they received playing at Wisconsin and Oklahoma, respectively, the past two seasons. (link)
