Welcome to a new year, new challenges, and new opportunities!

TREA would like to thank everyone that supported our pre-holiday, 12 days of Christmas auction. It was a great success and several participants rejoined us from last year along with new attendees.

TREA was pleased to attend the Ecological Farmers of Ontario Conference engagement session. We found many agencies and complexities in this sector. Information can be reviewed here

TREA recently supported a City Cycling Advisory Committee initiative in the process, with a volunteer to collect information and develop a file on bicycle infrastructure in the downtown area. The project team will look to identify bike parking theft protection tools for cyclists parking their bikes downtown.

As a note, City advisory committees usually wind down and restart shortly after the end of a Council term. This year, however, the existing committees and members will be extended until June 2019.
Upcoming Events
We look forward to starting the new year with a series of non-traditional conservation workshops starting Thursday, February 21, 7-9pm, Grosvenor Lodge, 1017 Western Road. These follow from a successful series TREA did in the past offering innovation steps under $100 to improve home energy consumption. Our first topic is “Reducing the Water Needs for your Home." Please register by emailing us at info@trea.ca or call (519) 645-2845 to confirm attendance.

TREA will have a display at the 26th London Home Builders’ Lifestyle Home Show at the Western Fair in the Agriplex building at 845 Florence Street. This is the yearly destination stop for Londoners for home improvement, renovation, and research of unique lifestyle products and services. Stop by!! We hope to share some exciting initiatives proposed for the community in 2019. Hours are Friday, January 25, 2019 | 12 pm – 9 pm, Saturday, January 26, 2019 | 10 am – 8 pm, and Sunday, January 27, 2019 | 11 am – 5 pm. Also look for the City of London’s extensive section that includes a London Environmental Network booth and an area promoting the City Cycling Advisory Committee.

One of our favourites events, where farmers and consumers have the opportunity to meet, is the 38th Guelph Organic Conference, taking place January 24-27 at the University of Guelph. Themes include crop production, livestock production, resilient farms/gardens, as well as community issues. For details, please click here.
Recent News

The City’s new Council’s Strategic Plan development (2019-2023) is currently underway. Feedback at various levels goes until the end of February. You can attend a presentation to Council on January 14. More information is available here

If you are sad that Dr. Dianne Saxe’s position/office is to be dissolved as an independent, non-partisan Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, please bring this to the attention of your MPP. Many think we still need the ECO’s quality evidence-based recommendations.  "For now we continue to do our work in accordance with the statutory mandate that we now have," said Saxe on Monday, January 7th, 2019. Just a reminder, Nature in the City begins next week! Series will commence on January 15 until February 19 in the main library. Please click here for more information.

Sincerely,
TREA Board
