A Winter Wonderland (Without the Worry)

Nearly 60 degrees yesterday, and potentially several inches of snow this weekend. We give up! While there's no telling what we will--or won't--see on Saturday and Sunday, it's a great reminder to get your snow plans in order! Please take a few minutes to read the following:

SNOW PLAN
The Georgetown BID works hard to make sure your customers and employees can safely get to your business immediately after snow events, but you also play a crucial role.

DC Law requires every business to clear its own sidewalk of snow and ice within 8 hours after it stops snowing. The BID’s goal is to have you clear your sidewalk during and immediately after a snow event in order for our retail district to stay open for business and function properly.

The BID:
  • Works with the DC Government to ensure that all our commercial streets stay plowed.
  • Shovels crosswalks at intersections and puts down salt.
  • Clears and salts sidewalks on DC and National Park Service bridges.
  • Lends shovels and ice breakers to businesses (for 1 hour) when their equipment has broken or been stolen.

Your Business:
  • Should identify the staff people, or contractor, responsible for shoveling snow and removing ice.
  • Should make sure the right staff person has multiple ways to get to work during/after a snow event.
  • Should have enough shovels, ice breakers, and salt to make the sidewalk in front of your business safe.
  • Customers still come to Georgetown when it’s snowing, and their walking packs the snow and turns it to ice. You can prevent this by shoveling early and often, keeping sidewalks safe and accessible.

If you haven't done so already, please fill out this Snow Plan form and email it to Georgetown BID Street Operations Manager Jorge Rochac at jrochac@georgetowndc.com so that the BID has a point of contact during snow events.

Shovel early and often, and stay safe this winter!
