It’s a new year at The Doerr Institute for New Leaders, and we are excited to launch another semester of developmental opportunities for Rice students. Doerr offers five unique programs to help ALL students increase their capacity to LEAD. ALL programs are open to ALL students without prerequisite so pick the program that’s right for you and register before the deadline at riceleader.org.
Amici di Via Gabina Traveling Fellowship
Apply by Jan. 20
This fellowship grants a summer traveling stipend for a student to provide a transformational opportunity in the study of architecture, art, history, archeology, language, music and culture. The fellowship is competitive based on submitted proposals for travel and study. Travel must be in Europe, with a preference given to applicants traveling or studying in Italy. For more information, or to apply, click here.
NSCI 320/520 - Public Science Communication Seminar
Register now! 
Do you like explaining science and your research to non-scientists and scientists in other fields? Learn more about the techniques used in effective public science communication in this seminar series featuring Rice faculty and outside speakers. This 1-credit course meets on Mondays from 4:00-4:50 PM in KWG 100.
PetroChallenge 2019 Informational

Join us for an information session on January 14th at 3 p.m. at the RMC, Farnsworth Pavilion. It is a hands-on educational event that allows students to gain insight into the decision-making process of oil and gas companies by utilizing the OilSim simulator. Students work as a team in a competition setting to explore and make decisions throughout the entire exploration and production business process. Also...free food! Cash prize for the winning team! Network with industry executives and gain valuable team collaboration experience. Please register for the event.
CCD Open House and Resumayhem

Unsure how to articulate your experience on a resume, CV, or cover letter? Need help in developing your elevator pitch before speaking with employers? Join us for food trucks and other tasty eats before you get your resume reviewed or practice your pitch with alumni, recruiters and CCD professionals at Resumayhem. A DJ will be spinning beats outside while you play lawn games and enjoy the food. Drop-ins are seen on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please bring a paper copy of your resume or your laptop if you are participating in resume reviews. More information.
Humanities Funding Opportunities Seminar
Register by Feb. 28
During this short seminar, participants will learn how to identify funding opportunities in the humanities. Tenured and tenure-track faculty, research scientists, and postdocs of any rank working in the humanities are eligible to attend. Snacks will be provided. Registration is required and is limited to 20 people.

 Data Science Fellowship
Register by Jan. 14 (early) or Jan. 21
The Data Incubator is an 8-week Cornell-funded data science training fellowship (think data science boot camp) for Ph.D.'s looking to enter industry. A variety of innovative companies partner with The Data Incubator for their hiring and training needs, including LinkedIn, Genentech, Capital One, and Pfizer. Anyone who has already obtained or who is within one year of earning a masters or Ph.D. is welcome to apply. Applications from international students are welcome, and there is no cost associated with the program. Apply here.
University of Tokyo 2019 Engineering Summer Education Program

Open to U.S. citizens/residents and international students enrolled as degree-seeking students at Rice. Visual Communication Symposium: Visualize Your Research

Nine visualization experts from various disciplinary backgrounds and professions will discuss the power of visuals in conveying knowledge and will explain how cutting-edge visualization technologies have led to their research breakthroughs. Individual sessions will cover figure and data visualization design, telling your story through illustration, diachronic mapping, and virtual modeling. Advance registration is required. Registration is free for Rice faculty, staff, and students (enter the access code RICECOMMUNITY before you select a ticket) and includes two meals per day.

Terracon has generously given Rice $5,000 to bestow on a STEM graduate student whose research contributes to a sustainable environment. Materials Take Complex Shapes On Demand
Spotted: Rice University professor Rafael Verduzco and grad student Morgan Barnes! They've created a rubbery, shape-shifting material that shows promise for soft robots used in biomedical applications. Watch a video about their work here.
Next up: Ultracold simulators of super-dense stars
Professor Tom Killian and graduate students Tom Langin and Grant Gorman have created the world’s first laser-cooled neutral plasma, completing a 20-year quest that sets the stage for simulators that re-create exotic states of matter found inside Jupiter and white dwarf stars.
