Elevating Mathematics Video Competition

The mathematical sciences are part of everyday life. Modern communication, transportation, science, engineering, technology, medicine, manufacturing, security, finance, and many other disciplines depend on the mathematical sciences, even if we don’t always realize it. It is important for mathematical researchers to convey the importance of their work to diverse audiences. This often comes down to being able to quickly and simply describe what you are doing and why.

With that in mind, the National Academies’ Board on Mathematical Sciences and Analytics (BMSA) invites early career professionals and students who use mathematics in their work to submit short video “elevator speeches” describing how their work in mathematics is important and relevant to our everyday lives. This can be an unedited selfie video, an animation, or any other format. We just want to learn about why your work is important in 1-2 minutes.

The winning video will be announced and played during the 2019 SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering in Spokane, Washington. The winning participant will receive $1000 and be featured on our website. You do not need to attend the conference or be a SIAM member to participate.

Workshop and Webcast on Frontiers of Big Data, Modeling, and Simulation in Urban Sustainability

Data, modeling, and simulations are critical to planning for and maintaining sustainable communities. We invite you to attend a workshop and webcast on January 30-31, 2019 that will bring together the emerging interdisciplinary network of practitioners, business leaders, academics, and policy makers using data for urban sustainability.

Download the Preliminary Agenda

Participants on Day 2 of the workshop will have a choice between three mini-workshops on the following topics: Air and Water Quality, Transportation and Physical Infrastructure, or Sustainable Inclusive Communities. These mini-workshops are a key aspect of the program to identify areas where cities and the research community can partner to advance urban sustainability.

Dates and Times:
Day 1: January 30, 2019 from 9am-5pm EST
Day 2: January 31, 2019 from 9am-3pm EST

Location: Keck Center, Room 100, 500 Fifth St., NW, Washington, D.C 20001
